Suiting Up

570 Words
The next few days, Rhea spent preparing for the job. She had never been a personal assistant. In her earlier job, she was called an assistant journalist but that entailed a completely different kind of assistance than what she will have to do now. In this one, her skills as a journalist would hardly be put to any use. Therefore, she tried to learn as much about the responsibilities of a personal assistant as possible and began to work on acquiring skills to serve those responsibilities adequately. After paying the pending EMI and putting a significant amount aside for future use, she went for shopping. Her current wardrobe can’t be used for her new job. After all, the secretary of the CEO can hardly be expected to show up in pelican print shirts and artsy skirts. Therefore, she spent a generous amount of her advance in branded formals, bags and shoes. Although it almost killed her to spend so much money on clothing, she knew it was necessary. Then she stopped by a renowned French perfume store. In past, she had only once purchased a perfume from here, which still adorns her illogically huge collection of perfumes. Rhea is a sucker for good perfumes. Even during her past employment the only extravagance that she allowed herself was that of perfumes and toiletries having perfume in them. Therefore, now that she had the money to spare, how could she ignore her urge to buy a perfume that she had been eyeing for years and only had been overlooking that urge because of the price! Not too long after, she came out of the shop holding a bag with the logo of one of the most prestigious French perfume brands and a lighter purse, but the smile on her face told the passersby of how contented she felt. She told herself that a high position employee of Korlin Group such as her is bound to have one or two of these in their toiletries, although she knew this was an extravagance that might cost her later. She also tried to learn as much about Korlin Group as was possible from the internet, put her sources at work to dig some internal information about the company, which helped her understand how well those non-disclosure agreements work. None of the employees that her sources approached agreed to talk about the company or their work in it. No one could identify the big boss let alone spill any information about him. Who is this man? Why isn’t there a single piece of information regarding him available that isn’t a formal statement on behalf of the company?” Somehow she could not help but be impressed by her new boss and at the same time felt disdain towards him, for his clandestine lifestyle, as it challenged the journalist inside her. However, she wasn’t to put her inner journalist at work for at least the next six months. “Nothing is worth the financial security that this job brought in,” she told herself out loud, half to remind her of why she took the job in the first place and half cause she could already feel the wheels at motion. She could feel that nothing would keep her from digging further. She knew that she could not hold that impulse forever, yet she tried to convince herself otherwise.
