"Who is Ash?"
I turned to the familiar eyes of Brian, and even though it wasn't a good thing that anyone near Caleb knew about Ash, I was put at ease that it wasn't Caleb himself.
"I'm sorry, I'll talk to you later Brian, I gotta leave now." I answered the truth and thankfully it was something to change the subject.
I turned quickly to run upstairs and ask Caleb for an early leave and grab my things but Brian was quick to catch my hand, holding me back.
"What's wrong? Tell me, maybe I can help."
The worry I saw in his eyes was confusing and I felt that I couldn't trust it.
I stopped trusting people a long time ago.
"Someone broke into my house and that's all I'm going to say." I responded stern-fully before removing my hand from his and quickly making my way upstairs.
Unfortunately for me, Caleb wasn't in his office and checking the schedule I had I remembered that he had an important meeting with one of his investors.
"He's not in his office." Brian stated the obvious, making it evident that he followed me.
I shook my head as I grabbed my bag and writing Caleb a note.
I knew what I was doing was unprofessional I any sort of way but seeing as how I don't wanna work herw anymore, I honestly couldn't careless.
"Wait let me grab my car keys. I'm coming with you." Brian spoke and ran to his office.
I looked at his retrieving back like he was crazy. I'm not getting him even more evolved in my personal life.
I made my way to the elevators not waiting for Brian to come back and immediately hailed a cab as soon as my feet touched the asphalt.
When I reached my house, there was chaos everywhere. Two police cars stood in front of our house and the curious bystanders crowded the area.
"Mom!" I called through the crowd as I zigzaged my way towards the entrance.
As soon as I reached the yellow ribbon threshold, I saw my mom holding Ash, with Zoe near the door and talking to a police officer.
"Mom!" I called again making her look my way.
"Ma'am, you're not allowed inside, please take a step back." A second police officer held me back, stopping me from bypassing the yellow ribbon.
"That's my house. And those are my mom and son over there." I explained to him as I pointed to my mom.
"That's my daughter, let her in." My mom chipped in as soon as the words left my mouth.
"Sorry ma'am." The officer took a step back and I quickly joined my mom, taking Ash from her and checking him from any injuries.
"Luckily no one was in the house when it happened so nobody got hurt." My mom informed me.
"Kate calm down he's okay." Zoe joked from beside me as I continued to crazily check every inch of Ash's body.
I smiled softly at her. "Can't help it."
He placed an assuring hand on my shoulder and replied with her own soft smile.
Zoe and I had been best friends since college. We were a big group but as the days passed and we all grew up, we eventually lost contact and didn't meet often. It was only Zoe and I left inseparable.
"What did the police say?" I asked to the both of them but my mom was quick to fill me in.
"The police said that they entered from the window after breaking it with a brick."
"And what about the blood?" I asked curiously.
My shook her head at me. "We still have to wait for the forensic results. It's scary thinking about it being human blood."
The though ran chills down my spine.
"At least none of you got hurt. You can come stay with me till everything's settled." Zoe jumped in.
"Thank you Zee that would be great." I thanked her.
The police officer that was interrogating my mom and Zoe before started bombarding me with multiple questions about where I was and if something suspicious happened.
And contemplated on whether I should tell him about the message I received earlier or not and was afraid they'd suspect Zoe of anything.
I knew for a fact that Zoe would never do anything to hurt us and even if it was true, I wanted to make sure of myself first.
I was just finishing up with the officer when my phone started ringing.
My screen blared with an unknown number and my suspicions floated in my head like a family of bees.
I decided to take this call away from the ear shots of everyone and immediately pressed the answer button.
"Okay listen to me, I don't know who you are or what the hell you want from us, but don't you think I'll take what happened lightly. You don't touch my family you got that." I fumed out, not giving the caller any space to say anything.
"Where are you?" A mail voice answered, making me take a step back.
I would never forget his voice.
"Caleb?" I asked even though I knew it was him.
"Where the hell are you Kate?" He asked again, angrier.
I tried to control my own anger and give him his excuse. I shouldn't have left like that during the work day, especially that I didn't take proper permission.
"I'm on my way now. I'll be at the hotel in-" I stated but was cut short.
"No."
The suddenness of it made us both keep quite for a while.
"Uhm.... Just whatever is it you have at home first." Caleb cut the silence and I didn't k ow how to react.
"Y-yes. I'm already finished though. I can be at the hotel in thirty minutes." I replied the truth.
I was already fi ished with the officer and mom and Ash would be staying with Zoe till I get back.
We were not allowed to stay at home until the police were done with their job. They were afraid any evidence would be tampered with.
"Do whatever you want." Caleb spoke coldly and it still sent a pang through my chest.
What in God's name did I ever do to him to treat me like that? To leave me like that? He was the one who asked for a divorce. I was the one who's supposed to be mad and cold.
I didn't dwell on the matter much and hung up the phone.
"Mom, I gotta get back to work." I informed my mom as I handed her Ash back.
"Was that your boss on the phone?" Zoe asked and I nodded my head, without further details.
I would eventually tell her but not in front of my mom. Mom wouldn't like the concept of meeting Caleb again and working with him as well.
"Sure honey. I'm sure you're boss wasn't very fond of you leaving so suddenly like that." My mom spoke and I offered her a reassuring smile.
I took in a deep breath before making my way back towards the hotel.
I had no clue about what Caleb's reaction would be or what he'd say but I wasn't willing to tell him any details than necessary.
The elevator ride was longer than usual and I felt very drained. The shock earlier has my knees buckling but I stood straight.
My phone dinged with the arrival of a new message.
'You shouldn't have done that Kate. You knew how much you meant to me. You knew how jealous I got but you still chose everyone else but me.'
I had my suspicions and with every message, I become more sure of who that person was.
I shook the idea out of my head.
She's not that crazy.
The elevator stopped and just as the the doors opened, I bumped into a hard chest and as cliché as it was, it was none other than the one and only Caleb.
"You're back." He stated plainly but I didn't miss his eyes going thoroughly over my while body before settling back on my eyes.
"Y-yeah. It was no big deal." I lied. And Caleb saw through it as he narrowed his eyes at me.
Luckily, he chose to remain silent about it.
"Good, now think of a way to fix the mess you put us in. President Lau decided to extend his stay till next week."
I sucked in a deep breath inwardly. I didn't want him to see the proof of my mess up on my face.
"I'll do what I can." I finally stated, not sparing any emotion.
Caleb's eyes roamed my body one more time before leaving me and getting into the elevator.
I finally let out a sigh.
The atmosphere is heavy and I hated it but I decided to shrug it off and move on with work.
I was going to leave either ways.
I picked up my phone and dialled a truly missed number. A small smile drew itself on my lips when he answered.
"Hey Joeyy." I spoke, lengthening the name.
"Hey Blue." Joey answered from the other side and I could hear his smile.
"What have you been up to?"
"I finally got a job as a secretary." I replied smugly.
Joey's laugh echoed through my ears. "The job of your dreams."
"Oh shut up. It's a start towards what I want."
"Sure sure." He chuckled on. "So, what reminded you of me now?"
"I need you to search something up for me?"
"You finally accepted that my skills are helpful." Joe smirked audibly.
"It still doesn't change the fact that hacking is illegal and immoral." I retorted back.
"You want me to help you or not?" He asked making me sigh.
"Yeah." I mumbled under my breath.
Joe was one of my college friends, and still is a very dear friend even though we don't meet or talk much.
He first took hacking as a stupid hobby but soon indulged more into the dark web and turned it into his business.
"Then stop whining and inform me with the details."
