Summer ran into the arms of a woman who was talking to the people sitting outside, The woman who...looked exactly like her. Hazel. The same Hazel he has been looking for all these years. No, it can't be. This was way too much of a coincidence. But can two people really look so alike? How was that possible? And she has a daughter too. She can't be Hazel. Damien's eyes landed on the drawing book in his hand and he scrolled to the first page, his eyes widening as he stared at the details.
Name: Summer Connery
Mother's name: Hazel Connery
Father's name: _________
Age: 4 years 6 months.
It was her. It was his Hazel. He was frozen. He couldn't breath or move or just bring out any reaction at all in him. He was just frozen as he watched her. Summer was Hazel's daughter. How? When? And then who was the father? Damien knew he needed to move before she looks up and spots him but he felt so weak like all the energy in his body has been sucked out that it was impossible to. Luckily, he found a cab approaching him just then and with some effort, he climbed in and managed to mumble the hotel's name to him.
Damien somehow stumbled into his room and flopped down on the bed. He ran away again. Like a f*****g coward. How many times has he practiced their first meeting in his head? Everyday for the past six years. Because it was the hope of meeting her that has kept him going. But it was a hundred times difficult than he imagined it to be. It was a whole different thing in his head against reality. He never expected his body to react this way, for his hands to go so cold or his heart beat so ferociously that it was bordering towards painful. And neither did he ever expected for Hazel to have a daughter. No, no...something doesn't fits. He was missing something.
He closed his eyes and tried to think clearly. Summer was four years old but because it was her birthday tomorrow, that means she will be turning five. Women were supposed to be pregnant for nine months so if he counts back, then she was born in the summer after Hazel left him. But that means Hazel must have been pregnant just around the time she left him. Damien's heart stopped as he joined the pieces together. Before she left him, he was the only man she has been with.
"And Hazel, while you are it, go and pay a visit to Dr. Davis. It's almost time for your second shot. Did you go and visit her every fifteen days as she asked?"
"Yeah...yeah, I did. All good. I will go and visit her today,"
"I have never seen him...so I don't know how he looks,"
"Mommy says, daddy is too busy to come and see us,"
"Mommy misses daddy too. Can you ask him to come back if you see him?"
Damien fumbled around for his phone and furiously scrolled through his contact list until he found Dr. Davis's number. Hands shaking wildly, he pressed the call button and every second that went by until she picked up seemed like a wait of years to him. His entire life might change after what she might have to say. And even if she has nothing to tell him about this, he was still pretty sure about what he was feeling inside.
"Hello?" Her voice was flat and calm as always.
"Dr. Davis, hi...this is Damien Hamilton speaking," Damien muttered, pushing the words out. "I hope you remember me?"
"It's hard to miss the finest business tycoon in the city," She answered. "How can I help you?"
"I need to ask you something," He said. "I know it's very weird but approximately six years ago, my girlfriend, Hazel Connery...I took her to you, to get a contraceptive shot? Do you remember?"
"Six years is a long time, Mr. Hamilton," She said. "I will need to check my records,"
"Please...please, Dr. Davis...can you help me with that?" He begged. "I need to know that if she got back to you for second shot after three months as you asked. I know it's very untoward but I am in dire need of your help,"
"Hold on, Mr. Hamilton...I will ask my assistant to check," She said.
'Thank you," Damien didn't want to wait but he didn't have much choice here so he did as she asked, his throat dry as hay.
"Yes, Mr. Hamilton, I remember now," Dr. Davis said, an eternity later, her voice grim. "Hazel did come to me but not for the second shot..." Damien froze, knowing very well what was coming next.
"Th...then?" He whispered.
"She was pregnant...one or two weeks," Dr. Davis answered. "As far as I remember, it wasn't expected because she was in terrible shock. We did a scan and then she left. She never came back again even though she was supposed to. I didn't give a call because I presumed you changed doctors or something and then it escaped my mind. I hope your child is healthy? It was too early to figure out the gender," Shock was understatement because what Damien felt surpassed everything he has ever felt in his life.
"Mr. Hamilton?" Dr. Davis prompted.
"It's a daughter," He whispered, his throat closing up with emotions so deep and heavy that he was baffled at the fact that he was even capable of that. "I...have...I have a daughter. She's completely healthy...she's...beautiful,"
"Congratulations. I wish you happiness and joy," Dr. Davis said.
"Thank you," Damien managed and cut the call. His insides burned as everything fell into place. Why Summer reminded him so much of himself and at the same time Hazel. Why he felt that insane pull towards the little thing. Why he longed to see her so badly...it was all because, she was a part of him. He created her. She was....his daughter. Tears streamed down his eyes as he remembered her words...
"Mommy says daddy loves me. Why doesn't he come home if he loves me?"
"I don't want gifts. I want daddy,"
"Can you ask him to come and see me before my birthday? It's next next day..."
"Don't forget to tell daddy to come home, please, sir. And please tell him that Summer loves daddy too,"
She was his daughter. He was the one she wanted so badly. He was the one she missed so much. He was the one she loved so selflessly even though she has never seen him. Summer was his daughter...he was her father. He didn't know what to feel. The joy that the revelation brought or the pain of missing years worth of memories with her. She was the one who still held him and Hazel together. Yes, maybe she happened accidentally but she was still a part of both of them. And Hazel kept her, despite everything that she went through at that time for him, she kept her and grew her up into this adorable, beautiful human being.
Damien knew he was supposed to be mad at her for hiding such an immense truth from him, the biggest truth of his life. But he wasn't because he could understand how she must have felt at that moment. He remembered what he said about kids back when they had that conversation once and he knew she acted from a place of hate and distrust. If anything, he was in awe of her and hated himself just as much. How hard it must have been for her all alone. Nobody to help her or stay by her side. Tears streamed down his eyes as he placed his head in his hands. They had a child together, a beautiful, healthy adorable child...which meant, their story hasn't ended yet. Hazel and Damien weren't over yet because Summer was the glue still holding them together in some way. And he knew this was his opportunity. He cannot screw up again. This was his chance to mend everything back, redeem for every wrong he did to her. Redeem for every moment Summer spent missing him.
Daddy... Damien smiled and cried at the same time. He felt so insane inside that words failed him. He stared at her small backpack and was amazed at how he ended up meeting her, so unexpected and yet so familiar. He scrolled through her drawing book and there were so many drawing of him that she made. Him and Hazel and her...they were a family.
"Damien?" Richard frowned at him and his eyes widened as he stared at his face. "What the hell...why are you crying?"
"Summer..." Damien whispered and Richard frowned at him.
"Yeah, I know it's summer...so?" He demanded. Damien shook his head and struggled to explain him. But how does he explain it to anyone when he barely believes it himself?
"Summer...is my daughter," He answered. "I am her father," Richard's eyes widened and he looked so pale like seen a ghost or something.
"What the f**k are you talking about?" Richard demanded. "Holy f**k! Who the hell did you get pregnant Damien? You haven't slept with anyone in a long time...shit..."
"Summer is Hazel and mine daughter," Damien blurted out, his heart swelling with happiness at the thought. "The little girl I met at the park...she is my daughter, Richard. She is mine daughter..." Richard stared at him blankly, opening and closing his mouth a thousand times.
"Wh...at?" He mumbled at last. Damien nodded his head and explained everything to him. He looked so shocked that he had to sit down for a bit and calm himself and understand what Damien was saying.
"Oh my god..." Richard said at last. "Oh my...Oh...that means I will be her uncle? Ohh...I am an uncle now! Can I get to spoil her?" Damien smiled and nodded his head before tears finding his way into his eyes again. Never in his wildest dream did he think that he could be this happy being a father. That he could feel so much happiness inside himself that there was not enough space in his heart to contain all of that.
"Congratulations, you are a daddy now," Richard smiled, reaching out to give him a hug. "I am so happy for you,"
"I am a father now," Damien whispered. "You haven't seen her Richard. She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my life...the most precious thing I held in my arms. She loves me so much...so unconditionally and selflessly, just like Hazel did. She is...she is..." He had no idea what to say. His emotions were taking over all his senses and sanity.
"I can't wait to meet my niece," Richard said, thumping his back. "Now what?" Damien stared at him and he knew what he needed to do. He grabbed Summer's things and headed for the door.
"Where are you going?" Richard asked and Damien smiled.
"It's my daughter's birthday tomorrow. I promised her, I will ask her daddy to get back to her," He answered. "I intend to keep that," Richard nodded and gave him a thumbs up.
It was time to get his family back...
