Amos said something I couldn’t hear. I felt eyes turn my way and I noticed a group of women walking behind me. My head ached as though their intense curiosity was drilling holes into the back of my skull. Amos spoke again, and Wilhemina responded, “I am keeping my voice down, Amos. I don’t want our business in everyone else’s face either.” She listened as her husband answered, and her response was slightly lower but still audible while a few of the bolder women crept forward to hear better. “Maybe it’s strange that she’s on her own, and maybe it isn’t.
