Chapter Fourteen

2141 Words
Alexander “What the hell are you doing here Lyla?” I watched her with narrowed eyes. It was the middle of the night and she had just interrupted what was with out doubt the best night of my life to date. I was pissed. My anger wasn’t lost on her but if the surly look on her face was anything to go by as she settled herself into one of the oversized chairs, she didn’t give a s**t. “I think I should be asking you that question Alex, what are you doing?” She pointed a red finger nail at me. “What are you both doing” She threw a look at Julian as he stalked threw the door. He had slipped on another t shirt. The one he had been wearing was now firmly on Hannah. She couldn’t very well walk back to the house naked with Lyla watching her every move. It had already been pretty clear that she had been mortified to be caught like that with us. “Because I’m pretty sure I walked in on something you two should defiantly NOT be doing with a human woman” “What we do is none of you damn business Lyla” Julian bit back. “My brother is right; you are our dearest friend Lyla but when it comes to our mate” I gave a shrug. “There you have no say” I watched as Lyla’s eyes went wide, just for a second, they blazed black. “Did you say your mate?” Julian grinned. “Crazy hu?” “You are joking right; you think your mate is HUMAN?” Her voice was growing louder. “You ant be serious?” “Be careful of your next words Lyla” My brothers voice was low and threatening. “Lower your voice” I shot a worried look at the door, The sweep of the stair case just in my vision. Hannah was nowhere to be seen. “She doesn’t know does she?” Lyla lowered her voice to a whisper. “She doesn’t know what you are. What have you got yourself into?” she shook her head. “Alex please tell me you are joking. I expect this kind of behavior from him” She motioned with her head. “But not from you. Do you honestly think she is your mate when she doesn’t even know WHAT you are?” “It’s no ideal but we are pretty sure she is our mate” “I am sure” Julian bit out throwing a look at me. “There’s no pretty about it. She’s ours” “And how is that going to work Julian? When she finds out you’re not human? Do you think she is going to be ok with that? Or do you think she is going to run and scream your secrets to the world” She shot a look of disgust at us both. “Our secrets? Do you realize how much danger you have brought upon the whole Mer community? Hell, the shifter community in general” Julian lowered his eyes. I didn’t. Did I know how dangerous this was? Yes of course. I had known the risks the moment I had laid eyes on her. When Julian had wanted to send for the dragons and have her gone. They were just risks I had no choice but to take. Hannah was ours. No amount of disbelief was going to change that. “You are my oldest and dearest friends” She reached for our hands. “I just don’t know how you are going to make this work. Mate her, give her the mark and then say hey honey just thought you should know I am part Siren; I can sprout scales and a tai at will?” She chuckled but it was a sad sound. “The poor girl is going to run a mile. I like Hannah if she was a shifter there would be no problem at all” She paused, worrying her lip between her teeth. “I just can’t see how this can end up with the happily ever after you deserve. The council will never allow you to tell her or mate her. They will have her gone and you will never be able to see her again” She held up a hand silencing Julian as he opened his mouth to speak. “No Julian, it wouldn’t be the same. She wouldn’t know you! What ever pull she feels for you both would be gone” “I won’t give her up no matter what the council say” I nodded my agreement. “Then you two best think quick because they are coming” She lent back, crossing one slender leg over the other. “That’s why I rushed over here when neither of you would pick up your phone. They are on their way. Representatives should be here sometime tomorrow” Shit, s**t, s**t. Suddenly my mouth was dry. I wasn’t ready for the council. We had barely begun to court her. She liked us but she wasn’t in love with us yet. The councils presence would put a major spanner in the works and Lyla was right, we couldn’t make it work in the short time frame we had, I needed a plan, a plan that would keep the dragons off of her and out of her mind. If they touched her, I would lose it totally and as deadly as I was, I was no match for a dragon. At best I would end up cooling my heels in prison at worst those sons of bitches would have me toasted before I could even blink. “I won’t let them touch her” Julian was working himself up into a frenzy I could tell. “Ill kill every single one of them if I have too” “Then you are going to end up deep fried, you can’t take on the dragons Julian. You have to be smarter about this. Use your head and not your brawn” Lyla nodded as if to herself. “I will help, your happiness is what’s important to me and if that means Hannah then so be it. You deserve the chance to see if she will accept you” The sound of footsteps on the stairs caught us by surprise. We turned to the doorway, but Hannah was already gone. I stood as I heard her bedroom door slamming. “Well I guess she knows now” Lyla said simply. Hannah My heart was beating so fast I was afraid my ribs would break. Sliding down the closed door I wrapped my arms around my knees, hiding my face. What the hell had I just heard? They were crazy, there was no doubt about it. I was living with two crazy men. Two dangerous crazy men and their even crazier friend. What kind of friend would go along with their madness. Would feed it. It wasn’t healthy at all. Lyla had seen me standing on the stairs, Julian’s t shirt brushing my bare knees. I had no doubt she had seen me; our eyes had met. Crazy. But maybe they weren’t. maybe it was me that was crazy. I had known what I had seen that first day, the changes that made Julian’s handsome face transform into something else. Something not human. I had seen those changes in both of them since. Subtle little changes to their face and eyes. The speed. The way they always seemed to know when I was lying or even turned on. Maybe they weren’t human, maybe they were something else. Something darker and scarier. Either way I couldn’t stay here even though every atom of her being wanted to. Here may not be safe. Grabbing my case, I began to throw clothes into haphazardly “Hannah” a slight knock and I froze. “Hannah open the door please” I shook my head, not that he could see. No, I would not open the door. I would not let his stupid handsome face change my mind. I had to get out of here. “I’m going to come in now Hannah” “NO” My voice was bordering on hysterical. “Hannah” then he was there, striding towards me. Wrapping his big arms around me. I stiffened I couldn’t help myself. Julian must have felt it as he stepped back, gaze lowered. “Am I that repellent to you now?” His eyes wandered to the bed, to the open case and the clothes strewn all about. “Are you planning on running?” His voice was angry. How dare he be angry at me! “What are you?” I turned on him, hands on my hips. Knowing I looked ridiculous when I was wearing nothing but his shirt. Not even panties. “I am a man” His voice was weary, but he didn’t step to me again. Just stood there staring at me like I was a frightened animal. Which of course was what I was. “What are you?” My voice was becoming louder and louder. “You aren’t a man” He shook his head sadly, brown hair flying. “No, I am not just a man, I am something else as well, but I think you know that already” Yeah, I knew, I had heard enough but I wanted him to say it. “You are a mermaid!” He laughed, and the sound grated on my nerves. How dare he mock me. How dare he be angry with me. Not when I was the one who should be angry, “Merman not mermaid but technically that isn’t right either, Siren or Mer-shifter is better” He said it so matter of factly. “You are crazy” I turned back too pulling clothes from drawers. “absolutely crazy and I’m leaving” “Hannah” He caught my wrist. “Look at me, just don’t scream ok” His voice was pleading. I didn’t want to turn to him. I had a feeling the moment I did my life would be changed forever. I turned anyway and bit back a cry of terror. He was still my Julian, still the same man who only hours before I had held in my mouth. His face was still beautiful, but it was wrong. His warm chocolate eyes were replaced with black prisms. No whites to be seen, there was a blue green sheen to his skin, like when sunlight hits the scales of a fish. “Don’t scream please” He was begging me, but it sounded strange. That kissable mouth full of sharply pointed teeth. I tore my hand away, my hand fluttering to my throat as I choked on the scream, he was begging me not to utter. “I won’t hurt you, we would never do that, but you need to see what we are” I reached out to touch his face and he lent into my palm. I believed him. I knew it was crazy. That I should run screaming from the room and never look back but now I was over the shock of it I could see him properly. He was still Julian. “Julian?” “Yes, yes its still me” He gathered me into his arms then. “You are beautiful” “You are beautiful and amazing, you know, that right?” “and crazy” I added but relaxed into his chest. I was definitely crazy. “We are crazy about you, will you stay? I know this is asking a lot and you will have questions” He placed a finger on my lips. “We will answer them all I promise but all we need to know now is that you are willing to give us a chance. Can you do that for two Sirens who are besotted with you? Can you trust us enough over the next few days?” Could I do that? It was to late for me, I knew it at that moment. Whether they were men or monsters I wanted to be with them. I nodded.
