The Family
Waking up to the sound of the birds chirping outside my window, I groan looking around my room wishing I can stop the sound those birds were creating. Taking a deep breath turning my head to an angle where now the bright sun is now kissing my face. My eyes blink, adjusting to the new light that is now affecting my eye sight. Turning my head back to the original side, I yawn instantly shutting my mouth as I now smell the breath that is coming out my mouth. My face crunches up in a sour expression telling me it is now time to get up and out of bed.
Once I got out of bed and began heading my way to the bathroom, a light knock on my bed room door made me halt, tip toeing quickly to my bed pulling the covers over my head right when the door open. I can hear the person heavy foot dragging their shoes towards my way.
"Asha" the voice I now recognize as my older brother Stanley. He's voice wasn't too loud, but just enough to wake me up. I didn't create a sound as I wasn't in the mood to be bothered. He repeated my name again a little louder now, adding a light shake on my shoulder.
"Asha, you need to wake up. Mom and Pop called me to wake you up, so you can get ready to go out with them. They're coming to pick you up." He said pulling the covers hard and fast away from me. I thank God that I'm wearing clothes, because if this fool pull the covers on me without me having clothes I would have strangle him. I finally surrender letting my eyes flutter open and drinking in he's appearance. Stanley gotten taller letting himself grow a beard and mustache, making him look more of a father model then a young adult. He's light brown eyes sent a smile an actually smile while glancing down on me with my annoyed expression. After a while of our staring contest I gave in smiling at him.
"Stanley what do you want?" I told him stepping on to the carpet and stretching my whole body. He laid on my bed looking up to the ceiling where the fan was turning. I called he's name once more and he finally looked up to me smiling in the process.
"I'm sorry Asha, but mom and pop wants to hang with you and called me here to wake you up." I sigh shaking my head and glancing to the clock that was on my bed room drawer. It read twelve fifty-two. I didn't start work until around four in the afternoon. I huff in annoyance trying to find an escape route from this situation.
"There's no way in escaping it this time Asha. You might as well go and see what they want to talk about with you." He told me as if he was reading my thoughts.
"Why don't you come with me Stanley, and that way we can also hang out and catch up." I told him while trying to find an outfit to wear before I go and shower. When I came back down home from college Stanley and I didn't have time to get together to catch up even though this is he's apartment and I was staying with him, because I didn't feel like living with our parents. I took a taxi down to he's apartment while he was at work, and was able to find the spare key he always hid underneath the mat.
I snap back to reality and I look back to where he was sitting and saw him thinking whether he should go with me.
"I don't know Asha-"
"Right now dad is okay with you and has no problems with you. I'm just the opposite and you know that. I can't be in the same room without him telling me the choices I'm making is horrible-"
"Asha, why don't you look at it in a way of him helping you-"
"Stanley you actually think dad is helping me? He's a control freak and the only reason I'm back here is because you, mom, Jessica and Angelica." I said whispering the last part. Stanley got quiet and clench he's fist on to the sheets, and I myself got quiet turning away from him. Maybe that wasn't a good idea to say, especially after what happen to her. My heart got heavy waiting for Stanley to say something, anything at this point. After a few minutes, he finally said something.
"I'll go Asha, you should call Jessica and see if she wants to come along." He said standing tall and walking over to the door.
"Okay"
"I'll let them know that we're both coming and we'll meet them at the place they made reservation at. Hopefully Jessica can come." He didn't let me say a word as he now closes the door as silent filled the room.
I got my uniform out and began ironing the pants first and later the shirt. I shoot a text to Jessica telling her I was home and how our parents wanted to meet with all of us for lunch and talk. I didn't get any text back from her when I came back from the shower leaving me disappointed.
"Asha I'll be outside in my car waiting on you, mom and pop called me saying they arrived at the restaurant." He said after walking pass my room. After a quick nod, I rush getting into my uniform since after lunch I'll be heading to work anyway. Pinning my long brown hair into a pony tail, I sprayed some perfume and head out the room door locking it in the process and made my way outside to Stanley car.
During the ride Stanley kept quiet while my eyes were glue to the passenger window. I try creating conversations, but each time he shot me down like I was some time of stranger. He was probably thinking hard over Angelica, because Stanley wasn't the type to linger on he's thoughts. When we pull up to the parking lot, I check my phone one more time to see if Jessica text back and sadly no text from Jessica. This girl is something else I tell you. I sent her another text and resend the earlier message to her to make sure she received it. I really wanted to see Jessica and catch up with her.
"I don't think Jessica is coming Stanley." I told him sadly and he just nod he's head and open the car door. When we both got inside the waitress knowing who we were already told us where we can find our parents. With a smile I thank her, Stanley and I made our way towards our parent. Mom of course got up to hug and kiss us while dad stood there smiling at us like we were he's prize he won.
"Look at my babies all grown up" mom said smiling hard at us. Stanley and I awkwardly smile back trying to get comfortable on our seat.
"How are you baby girl?" the voice that belong to my father. I glance up taking in he's appearance. If I had to use one word to describe him, I would use stress. The grey hair that were once hard to find, were now visible for anyone to see in all hair, beard and mustache. Dad always kept he's haircuts fresh and he's glasses up to fashion with young generation were now in style. I look between Stanley and dad and saw that Stanley was becoming more and more like he's father every day. The wrinkles on he's face was way more visible now while mom over here looking younger and younger. Mom would get so excited when people would ask me if we were sister.
"I'm fine Pastor" I replied to him. I know what you're thinking did I just say pastor instead of daddy or father. Don't call me weird or creepy, but that's how he wanted he's children to call him. He would literally whoop us when we use to call him daddy by accident. He told us being called pastor was a name that he earns from he's hard work and relationship with God over the past years. He once told us at dinner when we were younger that he just loves it when we call him pastor, because he felt it was he's duty to save us from evil.
"Stanley honey you didn't have to come along with your sister." Mom replied taking a sip of water from her cup.
"I wanted to come see you and hang with Asha at the same time." Stanley said throwing he's signature smile at them. I smiled, now that's Stanley for you. He can persuade you into changing your decision. Right when mom was about to replied, our waitress came asking us if we're ready to order. Of course when my father begins to order, the waitress squeal asking for he's autograph and picture claiming it's for her mother. After the waitress finish her mission and asking question, we all finally order except for me since I didn't have time to order since I was leaving very soon. My parents both eyebrows furrowed in confusion asking if I were okay.
"I have work later on guys" I told them. Stanley already knew since I told him over the phone when I was at college that I would be working when I get back. I didn't of course tell my parents, simply because they didn't approve of it. They always thought it was a very negative place, or in their saying the Satan club. I giggled to myself as I now waited for their comments.
"Work? Where? You didn't inform me about you working already. I made plan for your career as the choreograph for church. I was able to up your pay and get new uniform like you ask." He told me with he's stern look. Of course Stanley and mom got quiet letting father talk.
"I hope you're not working at that Satan club, I told you already that if you're working there I will- "
"Personal remove you, and give you a Christian bath. Yes, father I know and I'm sorry, but I am not your baby girl anymore. I graduate college and the only reason I came back is because- "
"Don't you dare finish that sentence. What did I ever tell you about cutting me of when I'm talking to you, especially you? I let you do whatever you wanted and I saw that you were able to grow into a beautiful young woman. It's now time to come back and start supporting your family." I waited till he was done so I can reply back to him. I knew coming here and meeting with them was too soon. He's voice was powerful like he was trying to command me more than converse with me.
"Being a dance choreograph was something I never wanted to be, and you knew that. When I was younger you force me into all these activities at church, because you wanted your family to look like the perfect Christian family." I pointed out to him. I was breathing hard trying to calm my nerve down.
"I pushed you to be an independent woman, like your mother. I challenge you and all of you guys to be an example of what God created you all to be."
"And look what happen to Angelica when you decided to keep pushing us dad." Another voice startle into the conversation. My mouth instantly shut tight and all eyes including myself were wide open. Dad got so quiet I can tell he was fuming inside. If he was a cartoon character, I knew smoke would have come from he's ears. Everyone glance over to the voice of the owner and saw it was Jessica. I smile taking in the appearance of her, she reminded me so much of Angelica. Jessica was Angelica twin sister, and I knew it pain everyone to see Jessica features looking exactly like Angelica.
Jessica plot herself right next to me and took a sip of my coca cola. Stanley and I threw a smirk over to her which she gladly smirks back and now all the William kids were here, well almost here, I sighed. This was going to be a long lunch I told myself.
"Hey mom, still looking young I see" Jessica said and mom turn her smile upside down glaring at Jessica. Mom and Jessica never can click no matter what the situation was. Just how father and I can't compromise, the same went for Jessica and my mother. You see Jessica here is a full lesbian and boy did I tell you Jessica had and still to this day have it worse than Stanley and I ever did. Mom is against gay rights you can say and well father just think everything you do that is not in the bible is a sin. I mentally did a victory dance when I check my time on my phone to see it was now three.
"Since everyone is here, Stanley why don't you tell your sisters the good news." Jessica and I both turn towards Stanley where he didn't have a hint of happiness in he's eye.
"I'm going to become a pastor guys" he replied and both Jessica and I stared at him, wishing it was a mistake and this is all a joke. The reason is because we both knew Stanley was never into the pastor life, so for him to tell us he's pursuing after dad is not something funny to laugh about.
"I'm sorry I need to go; Jessica can you give me a ride to work." I ask her pushing my chair back with the back of my knees.
"Of course no problem." She answered me and I went and kiss everyone on the cheek except for dad who was fuming on the inside. I thank God that we were out in public, so knowing dad he wouldn't ruin he's perfect reputation. I walk away with Jessica not looking back as we hit outside towards Jessica car.
