Muffy scrambled backward to sit even with me and pointed a shaking finger at the creature. “T-that’s the thing that attacked them!”
I frowned and glanced back at the motionless creature as its red eyes stared with fire at Darda. “But I thought they were just supposed to protect the city! Why are they attacking-”
The creature’s lips curled back in a snarl and it leapt ten feet into the air and over Darda. It grasped the hilt of its dark sword in both hands and brought the blade point-down upon Muffy and me. My eyes widened a split second before I leapt onto Muffy, wrapped my arms around her, and rolled us both out of the way. The creature crashed down on where we had just vacated. The force of the stab embedded the sword up to the hilt in the hard wood of the tree.
