Dad had not come home. The curfew bells tolled and Mum grew frantic. Gripping my arms so tightly her nail dug into my flesh, she looked at me with tear-filled eyes. “My sweet boy.” She leapt up. “I'm going to find him.” “You can't!” I stood up, trying to pull her down. “You can't, Mum.” Nan joined in, pleading, begging her not to go, at one point breaking apart, the tears tumbling down her cheeks. “Please.” But Mum was determined. “I have to go and look for him.” Nan and I exchanged a look, both of us realizing at that point no power was going to prevent Mum from venturing out into the lonely streets to find the man she loved.
