Kripa had arranged for Karna to stay with Sanjaya and his family. Because of the king’s blindness, Sanjaya was much more than just Dhrita’s official chariot driver. Sanjaya was in this respect more fortunate than other sutas, and enjoyed enough luxury for his household to afford Karna a room of his own.
Sanjaya found Karna more suitable clothes for his new training: some baggy trousers for him to wear instead of his dhoti, which would have tended to come undone during many of Karna’s activities at the Academy; and also a little coat. But Karna continued to wear a brown sash round his waist, and a suta’s headcloth.
