ELLIE
Lance called me the next morning and I met him and Cohen outside the hospital. My heart was hammering in my chest and my palms were slicked with cold sweat as I led the way to Kate's room.
When we entered, she paused the TV and looked at me with a furrowed brow. “What's going on, Ellie?"
“So, I did something," I said slowly.
Kate nodded and waited for me to continue.
I waved at Cohen. “This gentleman is here to heal you?"
“You got a vampire to heal me? I thought they refused to do that."
I shrugged.
“We do generally, but your sister is going to help me with something," Cohen said.
Kate's eyes darted between the three of us before welling with tears. Her already off colored skin went even paler. “Will it work?"
“Yes," Cohen said.
The tears spilled down her cheeks as Cohen stepped forward.
He pulled out a small pocketknife from his pocket and sliced his wrist without an ounce of hesitation.
His blood dripped, but he moved quickly and pressed it to Kate's lips.
She let out a little squeak of surprise, but then started to drink. Her eyes slid closed, and she let out a low moan.
I cringed and stepped back as something hot coiled in my gut. I didn't like her moaning like that with Cohen, but I didn't understand why.
As I watched her, color flooded her cheeks and the hollows below her cheekbones filled in.
Her eyes went wide and brightened.
Suddenly Cohen stepped back, and Lance handed him a damp paper towel from the bathroom to wipe his wrist down with. I followed his movements and saw that he was already healed.
I looked back at my sister as she choked out a sob. I did the same as I rushed to her and pulled her into my arms.
She was healed. My sister was healed.
We cried there together for several minutes. I couldn't contain the overwhelming feelings of relief and gratitude. She'd been dying for so long that I didn't know how to handle her being healthy. I'd never thought she would be again.
Cohen cleared his throat and we pulled apart to look at him.
“Get her checked out and meet us at the car," he said before turning and leaving the room.
Lance shot us a kind smile before following him out.
“What's going on, Ellie?" Kate asked as I pulled her to her feet. She wobbled for a second then grinned at me when she found herself to be strong.
“I agreed to have his baby in exchange for him healing you and paying off our debts."
Kate's eyes widened. “A baby?"
I nodded.
A baby.
Which meant s*x with Cohen.
I still didn't think he'd be very good at it, but I couldn't deny that I was attracted to the aloof vampire.
“Do you think that's a good idea? That seems like a big deal." Kate stripped off her gown and changed into the clothing I'd brought for her.
I watched her every move, looking for any sign that she might fall over, but it appeared that the blood had rebuilt the muscles she'd lost while stuck in bed.
I shrugged. “It doesn't bother me. I'll have the baby, then we can move on with our life, but until then we have to go live with them."
Kate blinked at me. “Live with them?"
“With the vampire clan," I said.
Kate squealed and did a little hop. “How exciting! Are they all as hot as those two? I bet we'll meet lots of cool vampire guys."
I wrinkled my nose at her. I was going to be knocked up, not on the prowl for a boyfriend.
I got Kate ready, and we checked out of the hospital. Interestingly enough, there was a box for them to check that mentioned vampire intervention and after that it was smooth sailing.
When we finally climbed into the back seat of Cohen's SUV, I was ready to get to our new home.
Without a single bit of conversation, we drove to a small airstrip and boarded a private jet.
When Kate saw it, she finally started talking and didn't stop.
The plane was luxurious and done up in neutral tones, but I was too focused on the fact that we were about to leave our home for good. I didn't know when or if we'd ever come back. I'd packed us each a couple of bags and gotten rid of the rest of our belongings. Technically, once the baby was delivered and I was healed, we could go anywhere.
Kate kept up a steady stream of conversation with herself for the whole forty-five-minute flight.
Eventually, we landed and hopped into another waiting SUV. Lance drove and soon we were on a long, single lane, winding driveway that was lined with towering trees.
We weren't far outside the city, but you'd never know it by how exclusive and spaced out it all was.
Out the window, I watched as we pulled up past a towering mansion. It looked like a modern-day castle with stone and one rounded corner that seemed to climb apart from the rest of the home.
Lance followed the driveway around to the back of the home where there was another building built off to the side that was long and looked to be barracks or something. There were two, five car garages stationed across from each other and Lance pulled up right in the middle of them and parked.
“I'll let you out here," he said.
Kate and I nodded before climbing out. Cohen said something quietly to Lance before joining us.
“He'll have our bags delivered to our rooms later," Cohen said. “Let's go."
Cohen led us up to the back of the house as people began to spill out and line up on either side of the sidewalk.
My eyes went wide at the number of them. Lance had mentioned that their clan was small, but there were easily a hundred people waiting for us.
I scanned the crowd and found them almost exclusively to be vampires, but for one pregnant woman and a small group of humans set off to the side.
The group looked happy enough, but many of them had slight bruises on their necks and wrists. The bites had healed, but not the bruises.
They were feeders.
I'd heard about them but never met one before.
The other woman was somewhere in the middle of her pregnancy. I knew vampire pregnancies were shorter than human ones, so I'd guess around three months, but I really had no clue.
Cohen led us into the house and up a giant staircase. Then another one. And another one.
There he started pointing out rooms. “There's my office. There's my bedroom. Those two are your rooms and that one beside mine is what will be the baby's room."
Kate and I nodded but said nothing.
“Freshen up, relax. Lance will have your belongings delivered shortly. Someone will call you down for dinner."
And with that, he opened his office door and closed it with him on the other side.
Kate and I looked at each other with matching frowns.
That man was a hot mess.
