Chapter 5Sutter wasn’t surprised when he woke up and found Max sitting in the same chair he’d been in when he’d fallen asleep, though he was shocked to see that the chains and bungee cords were all gone and he had no memory of them being removed. His rest had been deep enough to make him oblivious, his body drunk on the fresh influx of Max’s blood. He still ached, but much of the searing pain had ebbed, manageable now in the way a flogging or whipping could be. All thanks to Max and his unexpected gift. “I’ve been thinking,” Max said.
