“Kanika, what do you mean by that?” I asked, my eyes fixated on her face.
"She was 15 when all that happened. There was a worker named Shar, handsome and strong. Even the Royal ladies were swooning over him. Princess Marrion used to ask him for chores and it was a matter of time when they fell in love. The news finally got to Madame Noela. She didn't like what was going on, she told Lord George that Shar seduced Marrion, who then punished Shar by putting him in a coffin, alive.
They say that he stayed alive for a little time and then he died. " Her eyes were watery and so was mine. I couldn’t believe the pain and how scared he would be, “By that time, both of them were only 16 when all that happened.” She continued, making my heart lose its beat.
"That's so horrible, what about Princess Marrion?" I wondered, because it was strange that she died too.
"She hid her pregnancy from everyone for months and then obviously Madame Noela caught her lie, she gave her some kind of poison in her food, thinking it will only kill the child and will free Marrion from the sin and she will make the Princess marry in a royal family once a day. But she was wrong, Marrion bled to death that night." I saw sadness coming down Kanika's eyes as tears. Even the slaps didn't hurt this bad the way this story did.
“That’s horrible,” I said under my breath. All that because of their stupid rules and differences they have set between us.
“I told you, they are horrible Shanice, you should be careful with them.” She repeated what everybody has been telling me ever since I was getting prepared to serve the royals one day.
"Who lives in the lighthouse?" I inquired, trying to divert my attention from the horrible ending of Princess Marrion and Shar's love.
"You do know that there are few royal families surrounding our village right? Every family owns a particular area and worker, who we know as Slaves but they want to give them a fancy name, hence the workers. The lighthouse belongs to Lord Albert, who lives with his daughter, Princess Agnatha, she is famous for her beauty." Kanika mumbled very delightfully. "Lord Albert is the only one who buys a slave and then frees them, gives them clothes, food, and even respect. All the land owned by Lord Albert is called a lighthouse. I wish he was the one to buy us than this family." She added, “You know, the people who are always very happy and living the life in the village are working under the lighthouse Lord and they are not even bound to but they love to work for them to earn for their families.” She had a hint of sadness in her tone and I guess I understand her. Who wouldn’t want freedom? I doubted if any other Royal family was this generous.
"Do you think Prince Warrick visits lighthouse for Princess Agnatha?" I was wondering about it the moment she mentioned this beautiful princess I had seen in the carnival because it felt like he only felt comfortable at the lighthouse.
"Maybe, but you know everyone wants their son to marry Princess Agnatha, let's see who will be the lucky one." She stated with a shrug to her shoulders.
"You both get back to your huts before you piss me off." DeShawn’s loud shout startled us to our feet, we saw him, eyeing us both. We both ran inside our huts in order to avoid pissing him off. DeShawn followed me, but didn't utter a word. I saw bruises on his face, that's why he was mad.
So, we both siblings got a beating on the same day. I laid my head on the pillow and all of a sudden, my mind thought of Williams. Will he be out of his punishment? What if they hurt him badly?
With those thoughts in my head, I finally dozed off into my secure place; my dreamland.
I woke up to my mom yelling at me, my siblings hurrying up to reach the mansion without eating breakfast. Basically, this was pretty much our daily routine. Those days were blessed when we get to enjoy the morning time and have breakfast, which rarely happened.
Together, we reached the mansion and soon everybody got busy with their share of chores.
"Clean Flora's room after my room." Madame Noela ordered walking out of the room. I walked out of the room after cleaning her room and towards Princess Flora's room, she wasn't in the room. I quickly started making her bed before her arrival, it was always awkward to stay in a room with these royals alone. It was advisable to wrap up the work when they are not around if you don’t want to end up being an object of their entertainment.
"Flora, Flora!" I jumped on Prince Luke's voice, who barged in on me in rage. He was standing in the door, his hands wide open on either side of the door’s frame.
"Where is she?" He questioned, glaring me in the eye.
The previous encounters that we had were so unpleasant that seeing him in front of me, instantly gave me goosebumps.
"I don't know. When I came she--" I was interrupted by his loud sigh, making me tremble in my skin and lowering my head quickly. I would not want to piss this one-off.
"Don't talk too much, your voice makes me vomit mud,” He rolled his eyes and jogged towards the balcony, looking for his sister. He thought I was lying or what?
"Ugh!" He groaned and muttered some words in his mouth. I continued doing my work, mending the bedsheets but Prince Luke has something else in his mind. He jumped on the bed, pulling the sheets off the bed and resting one foot on the other as he laid there, his sigh echoed through the room. I took a pace back and waited to react. What was I supposed to do now? Wait for him to leave so that I can do my job or leave the bedsheets like that?
"What was your name again?" He definitely acted like he had forgotten my name.
"Shanice," I said, my hands tied in front of my body and my head lowered down.
"You have big breasts." His comment sent shivers down my spine, knowing his eyes were on my body made me uncomfortable. I remained silent, feeling bad inside my body. Why does he have to be the one I encounter every day?
