I lifted my face to find Kanika standing in between us, parting him from reaching me, "What is wrong with you?" she placed her hands on his chest and pushed him away, he was growling and glaring at her like a mad beast.
I got up and shed my dress from the dust and the leaves that were stuck on it. I could see the old ladies of the village whispering something in-ears regarding this incident, from my peripheral vision.
Though Kanika was separating us, I noticed his eyes traveling from Kanika to me again. Without further delay, I booked away as fast as possible to my home, my hut. On the way, I ignored the ladies' passing comments, my steps were fast but not enough to look like I was running.
I did notice him following me briskly.
"Weren't you decorating the trees?" inside the hut, I was greeted by the annoyed Kelly. She had been working super hard since the morning and would not leave a chance to scold me.
"I was, but then your brother got bit by a mad dog!" I stuck my tongue out at her to piss her off.
Honestly, the amount of control both my elder siblings would show me was making me lose my patience and be disrespectful to them.
Giggles from Tiara and Cica were instantly subsided by a loud hush from Kelly.
"Wh--" I knew it was her time to lecture me now. But before she could proceed, the angry brother, I had left outside, marched in.
"You!" DeShawn pointed at me after he made sure he had locked the door behind him.
"What did she do this time?" Kelly came between us without wasting a single moment in order to spare my little siblings from the trauma of their brother beating their sister mercilessly.
"She asked Prince---" He stammered, "Prince Warrick to do her work." He declared without a single shame of lying on everybody's face.
I was left with my mouth hung open in disbelief and shock at how he twisted my words.
"What sh---" my sister didn't even finish and swirled around like a fast-flowing wind and smacked me across my cheek.
The loud smack was followed by a gasp from my little siblings, who were now hiding in the corner of the room, hugging each other.
"Did I tell you to not get us in trouble?" As she pinched my ear and twisted it, her voice turned heavy coming out from the gritted teeth.
"I didn't! He helped me himsel---owww!" I couldn't bear the pain as she twisted my ear more.
"Go and ask him yourself!" I slapped her hand away and stepped away from her.
The painful thing wasn't the Royals beating us, but my own family was divided into two. I don't know which one I was supposed to be in, but most certainly in the ones that are not dear to anyone.
"I will kill her som---" my brother rushed again, but this time Kelly stopped his proceeding efforts.
"We have a lot of work pending now, and we need her to help take some load off our shoulders," She quickly bantered in her normal voice.
I was standing stubbornly with my hand cross over my chest, facing away from them.
"Teach her to stay within her limits." He growled once last time before turning away and leaving the hut.
"You li---" as Kelly began to threaten me, I showed her my palm and swiftly walked past her to my little siblings, to hug away their fear.
Their hard hands did hurt my tear-filled cheeks, but the pain of my siblings crying in the corner took over my physical pain.
"Then go and do the chores," Kelly mumbled from behind me, going back to whatever she was doing before getting her own frustration out on me.
After making sure my siblings had calmed down, I left the hut to do the rest of the work. The sun has started to set down and I still hadn't hung the Lanterns from the trees. I picked up a few Lanterns and as I was about to reach the tree to hang them, I heard the clopping of the horse hooves striking against the ground.
"The royals are coming!" one of the villagers ran in the opposite direction, hiding his kids who weren't tagged as workers yet. Since I was a worker now, I was allowed to sneak a peek at them, but the ones with no worker tag weren't allowed and that's when my mind recalled my sibling.
"Cica!" my lips uttered his name in sudden fear and horror of him being out. The Lanterns slipped off my palms as I decided to make a run for the ground behind my gut where my siblings used to play with our kids.
I had no idea I was crossing the path of the royal horses when a loud shout froze my steps on the spot.
"Do you not know you filths are forbidden from crossing our paths?" some old respectable guard yelled, I was able to see them clearly now.
The guard was on the horse, and behind him was another horse, the horse being ridden by Prince Luke.
"I'm so s--orry!" I stuttered in my mouth, nervously playing with my fingers as I spoke to him with my head bowed down.
I was a little away from the huts, from the civilization. The road leading to the village from the palace was supposed to be covered with decorations and lanterns to please their eyes. And I was merely doing that.
"Go take a round!" The voice of Prince Luke sent shivers down my spine the moment it became audible.
The guard began to ride away to the village while prince Luke stayed behind on his royal horse. My body hadn't stopped bowing even after minutes passed by. I wonder what he was doing, I could see the horse impatiently moving on his spot, but the silence was all I got from Prince Luke.
As the curiosity took over me, I raised my face just slightly enough to steal a glance of him.
He was scanning me!
My lips parted with a gasp escaping suddenly and I lowered my face again.
"Turn around!" his voice sounded aggressive as he ordered my shivering soul.
I knew I was in huge trouble. If only I could just say no to him. I gulped once before nodding in agreement and slightly raising my face. He was still watching me, but I was not allowed to stare back at him.
I clamped my hands together in front of my body under my abdomen and slowly turned around, facing away from him.
"Stop!" he commanded me to stop just when I was completely facing opposite to him, it was no surprise what he was doing.
I closed my eyes, pinching my fingers to subdue the anger and disgust I felt while I stood there for a bastard to scan me from behind.
“Ah! What a sight to see,” his loud voice must have been heard by everyone in their huts. I couldn’t believe my first day out for the carnival and I bumped into this bas***.
Wasn’t he sick? Why the hell was he here on this poor horse?
“But obviously you must smell bad, so I might catch you when you have taken a shower,” he stated in a prideful voice while I stood with my face turned to the empty space and my back to him.
Just when I prepared myself for another harsh comment, I heard him ride away on his horse. The sigh of relief that escaped my lips was the best feeling ever. I was able to turn around and glare at him as he disappeared away.
Now I know why does every villager looks so traumatized when they get back to the huts after a long day of torture in these Royal’s mansions.
