It was five minutes before my lunch break, and I was up front at the cash register. It was Cressie’s day off, so I would be eating by myself today. It’s not that I didn’t like hanging out with my other coworkers. They were just too lively for me, always talking about the latest clubs or reality shows, none of which interested me. And even though most of them were only a few years younger than me, I felt really old around them. I called for the next person in line as I set aside the books someone had returned. I looked up with a smile to greet the customer, and froze. It was Nel. With a slight smile, she said, “Hi Carmen.” She looked good in her uniform, very fit and attractive with her neat brown hair, and her driver’s hat under her arm. I was right. We were the same height. Speechless,
