Kelsey POV
I woke up this morning with an email from Dr. Piper informing me that I had been selected to be her personal assistant for the conference and that the position required a different assignment that pays $1500.00 flat. My assignment consisted of me being the guide to both the keynote speakers and the senior communication students that were selected to do a roundtable discussion with the keynote speakers. My first task is to notify the senior communication students of their selection and give them instructions on when, where, and what time to meet me as well as introduce myself to them via email. Dr. Piper didn’t provide an email template but as a junior in the Communications program, I’m sure she expected me to create a professional email.
As soon as I sat down to work on the email, Annette called me to congratulate me on the personal assistant role.
“Congratulations Chica, I heard this morning that you were selected to be Dr. Piper’s personal assistant and you are assigned to the speakers and the senior communication VIP students. Are you excited?” She shouted with excitement as soon as I answered my phone and I laughed.
“Good morning Annette, you would have anything to do with that, would you?” I said with a laugh and she laughed too.
“Of course I do, what kind of friend would I be if I didn’t put in a extra word for my girl? Dr. Piper only thought of it last night when she realized how busy she would be and when she spoke her thoughts out loud I told her you were the best option from all the others selected to work the conference. She quickly looked at your resume and agreed.” Annette said full of excitement, and I smiled.
“Thank you, this is an honor and I appreciate you going the extra for me. I need to send out emails to the senior communication students. I love you girl. I will see you at Manndible’s later.” I said and she quickly said okay and see you later before I ended the call.
Today is already the first day of the conference and I hadn’t realized how fast the week had past me by. I needed to do so much, and I wasn’t really ready but first thing first, I needed to get these emails out so I drafted the email first. When I was satisfied with the draft, I went and took my shower and put on my clothes. Once I was dressed, I reread the email and was satisfied with it so I typed in the student email addresses and pressed send. Just that easy, my first task was done. My second task was to pick up coffee and pastries for Dr. Piper and the three keynote speakers and deliver it to Dr. Piper’s office no later than 9:30 am. It is already 8:30 am and I preferred to get them a cup of Manndibrew blend, so I quickly grabbed my bag, keys, and phone and left my dorm heading to Manndible café to pick up their items. The best part is as an employee I could just go behind the counter and make it myself.
When I got to Manndible’s it was very busy and Omar was all alone until Amanda arrived, so I quickly made Dr. Piper and the speaker’s coffee and grab their pastries and set them all aside. I looked at the clock and it is 9:05 am which means Amanda is late and should be walking in at any time. I quickly put on an apron and took the orders for the next three customers in line and by the time I returned from dropping them to the kitchen, Amanda was walking into the café. Once she was clocked in, I grabbed the items for Dr. Piper and the speaker’s and left going to Dr. Piper’s office. I arrived at 9:25 am giving myself five minutes to spare.
As soon as Dr. Piper and the speaker’s arrived I handed them their coffee and pastry and sat down with my note pad to take notes. When our meeting was done, I escorted the speakers to their staging area dressing rooms and waited until it was time for Dr. Nick Morgan to go on stage for his first keynote. It was already thirty minutes after the conference began and he was walking out of his personal dressing room ready to go. Dr. Nick is a peculiar man but a delight to conversate with. Once we arrived at the stage, he thanked me and I went back to the dressing rooms to wait for Kindra Hall’s turn.
It was almost time for today’s breakout sessions, and I checked my schedule for the speaker’s lunch break, when I opened my phone, I had six new emails. I started to read the emails which most of them were from the senior communication students confirming their acceptance of the invitation to the roundtable discussion tomorrow morning but then there was a forwarded email from Mr. Jameson regarding my father’s PECASE Award. I quickly opened the email from Mr. Jameson and read it.
‘To whom it may concern, this is an email to be delivered to the family of Dr. Jonathan Jones. This email is to request your attendance at the honorary ceremony to award Dr. Jones for his excellent research in the medical field. Although, Dr. Jones’s research is being continued by his protégé Dr. Keith Jameson, the PECASE award is being presented to Dr. Jones for his research and work that occurred prior to the establishment of his research foundation. It saddens us that Dr. Jones is no longer with us and therefore is unable to accept this honor personally, but the award board would like to present this honor to a living relative or dependent child on Friday, May 28th, 2021. The acceptance can be by either a living relative, a dependent child, or both. Please RSVP at the web address listed below no later than March 31st, 2021. With Sincere Regards, The Department of Health and Human Services PECASE Award Board.’
When I finished reading the email I sat there for a moment with a smile on my face until my alarm sounded for me to go gather the speakers for their lunch hour. After I gathered my belongings and composed myself, I went back to the speaker’s dressing rooms to pick them up and escort them to the lunch in the small conference room set up specifically for them.
