CHAPTER 1

DAWN placed the flowers in front of her grandmother’s grave. She sat there and accompanied her grandmother for a moment. “Grandma, I’m leaving this place. I know you wanted me to leave this place and live somewhere where I would be safe. Don’t worry, I will protect myself. I’ll come back to visit you.” The wind in the cemetery was chilling and Dawn was alone. Dawn feels slightly afraid because of the silence that engulfs the whole place, but she encourages herself. She looked around the cemetery. There was really no one in this place except her. Dawn took a deep breath and looked at the cloudless sky. The sun was unbearably hot. But off the East, thick dark clouds were building. A storm was definitely brewing. “I think I need to get home early today.” She stayed at the cemetery for thirty minutes, just sitting quietly beside her grandmother’s grave while reading a book. It’s been many months since her grandmother died. Just a few days after her graduation, her grandmother suddenly died, and she didn’t know the cause of her death. Her grandmother was healthy but even so, she was thankful that her grandmother didn’t suffer before her death. Dawn caressed the stone tablet of her grandmother. “Grandma, I’m leaving. I’ll come back to visit you again.” She stood up, picked up her bag, and left the cemetery. Before she went home, she stopped at the convenience store and bought some food for her dinner and breakfast for tomorrow. These past months, she’s been eating take-out or instant foods to address her growling stomach. She had no appetite since her grandmother died. Her grandmother was the best in the world for her. She grew up as an orphan with only her grandmother taking care of her. Said that her parents passed away early when she was five, but she doesn’t remember anything about them. It was hard for her to move on because her grandmother was really kind to her. So, she decided to move to another place and considering to look for a job in the place where she will reside. Sighing, Dawn bought a prepared pack of food and instant noodles for her breakfast tomorrow. Remembering her happy memories with her grandmother makes her happy but sad at the same time, because she is gone and will never come back. Dawn paid at the cashier and when she came out of the convenience store, the cloudless sky was now replaced with dark clouds. She smiled a little after looking at her wristwatch. It’s going to rain early. She thought and walked towards the terminal. She entered the mini-bus and sat in the back seat. Suddenly, the rain poured heavily. Fortunately, she was wearing a jacket, or else, with the air-conditioning inside the mini-bus, she might catch a cold. Dawn closed her eyes while waiting for the mini-bus to move. After ten minutes, the mini-bus finally moved. She opened her eyes and saw that the mini-bus was now full of passengers. She observed the other passengers on the bus. Some of them were busy with their phones — chatting and playing games, while others were sleeping. She was sitting beside the window and the rain that was hitting the roof of the mini-bus was cascading on the windows. Dawn stared outside. Her eyes were looking at the passing vehicles. The bus was now running on the highway. The rain was still pouring heavily. Dawn was soaked in rain when she arrived at her house. She quickly changed her clothes so as not to catch a cold and ate her dinner. After eating dinner, she went to bed. The rain was still pouring outside but as heavy as earlier, but the wind was strong, enough to take down some small trees. She stared outside through the closed window of her room. Then she took the medium-sized traveling bag beside her closet and put her clothes, the important things she needed, and the bank book her grandmother left for her. The bank book has a lot of money, but she didn’t have to be wise about how to spend it. Suddenly, an old book and a small box dropped from her closet. Dawn was confused because she remembered that she owned an old book, and she didn’t remember putting a book inside her closet. She picked up the old book, her eyebrows raised when she saw the contents. It was full of words that she didn’t understand. She was about to throw it in the bin when a fold of paper fell from it. She picked up the folded paper and was stunned when she found out that it was a letter from her grandmother. Dawn, my dear granddaughter, when you read this, it means that I’m gone. Take this book with you and it will help you in the future. Remember, you are you. Don’t listen to other people. You know who you are. Live well and don’t let others bully you. Fight back. And remember, choose what your heart says and take care. I love you, my granddaughter. A tear fell from Dawn’s eyes. “Grandma…” she was staring at the letter. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and dried her tears. She folded the letter and clipped it to the book. Then she put the book in her bag. She must take it with her. Then her eyes fell into the small box. It was a small old box. There was even dust on it. She blew the dust away and opened the box. She saw two gold necklaces inside, but what stunned her was the design of the necklace. The two necklaces were heart-shaped pendants but inside the pendant, a skull was engraved with a flower struck into the skull. Dawn suddenly felt a chill feeling just by looking at the necklace. The necklace looked like a couple's necklace. “What was this thing that grandma left for me?” she asked. Then she saw a piece of paper beside the necklace. She took it and found out there was a note. It’s for the right one. Dawn shook her head after reading the note. She knew what her grandmother meant by the note, but right now, she didn’t have the mood to find the right one. She found another piece of paper in the box. Three words were written on it. Crystal Moonlight Pack. Dawn searched on her phone for the Crystal Moonlight Pack, but there was no relevant information about it, so she ignored it and just put the paper inside the box. Dawn put everything in her medium-sized traveling bag and she slept early that night. Dawn woke up early the next morning and prepared her breakfast. After breakfast, she took a bath. Then she took her bag to the living room. She made sure that all the furniture was covered with white fabric. Then she shut down the current and locked the house. As she walked away from the house she grew up with, she took one more glance, a small sad smile appeared on her lips, and turned her back. While waiting for a bus on the highway, she watched the passersby pass in front of her. Many vehicles also passed by. This is her first time leaving the countryside and her first time going to the city. She knew that it wouldn’t be so easy to live in the city, but she needed to go there. As long as she was in the countryside, she couldn’t forget the sad memories that happened there. A few minutes later, a bus stopped and she got in. She saw it in the middle row and beside the window. As the bus hit the road, she was staring outside, and watching the people on the road. Dawn didn’t notice that she had fallen asleep, and when she woke up, the bus was doing its stopover. She checked her map of where she was. And the map says that it takes one more hour to go before she will reach her destination. Arriving at her final destination, a small smile appeared on Dawn’s lips. She got out of the bus and took her bag from the side compartment. She looked around her, the city was very different from the countryside. She can’t even see a single tree except those small trees planted at the center of the road, which serves as a barrier. Dawn took a deep breath and settled into a small apartment. The apartment has everything she needs. Though it was small, it was already enough for her. A room, a kitchen, a small living room, and a comfort room. She was alone, so that was enough for her. She had also paid her rent for the first two months. “You’re new here?” her landlady asked. Dawn nodded. “Then let me give you a piece of advice. This place was full of jerks and thugs. Be careful.” Dawn nodded again. “Thank you for your advice, Mrs. Cruz.” Mrs. Cruz smiled and left. Dawn sighed and sat on the small sofa. No wonder that the rent was cheap. She thought. No one would want to stay in a place like this, full of thugs. Of course, when people are looking for a place to stay, the place should be safe. No wonder when she was walking outside earlier, she noticed the men looking at her with evil intent.
