CHAPTER TWO SUSANNA GROWLED AS her phone screeched at her from her nightstand. The clock mocked her by shouting out the time—five-fifteen—in bright red letters. She growled at the clock, too, as she reached for her phone. “Hello,” she growled into the phone once she slid it unlocked. She was sure she possessed a few more growls for whoever called. “So, you are alive. Well, that’s good to know. I guess I can pass out now. Literally.” Anne’s words were slurred, and it wasn’t because she just woke up. If Susanna knew her friend at all, and she did, then it would be more accurate to guess that Anne just got home.
