21 They rushed up the rungs, but even their best efforts proved to be too slow to increase the distance between them and their silent pursuer. The mist gained on them another couple of feet, and by the time they reached the last grated platform the mist licked at Drifter’s boots. Allie climbed onto the platform but froze as a cry came from behind her. She spun around to find Drifter clinging to the last wrung.
