19 The pair ventured onward and soon found a service elevator. They stepped inside and Drifter pressed a button on the panel. The elevator lurched upward. Allie swept her eyes over the metal interior of the box. “A lot of this looks like humans built it.” Drifter stepped back to stand beside her. “Simple designs have a universal appeal.” She cast her eyes on her stoic companion. “What about you?” He raised an eyebrow at her, but the corners of his lips twitched upward. “Are you asking if I’m simple?” She shrugged. “I meant about your people. You look human. Is that some sort of a trick so you can walk around with us without being noticed, or do you really look like that?” Drifter stared ahead as he pursed his lips. “I’m not quite on speaking terms with my people.” Allie f
