Chapter 16 Samuel washed his face with water in his hotel room bathroom, unbuttoning the top shirt of his tuxedo and losing the jacket. He needed to breathe. Leaving Caro and Luke’s reception had been the right thing to do. Pilar had every right to be happy. He went into his empty room and flipped the TV on for white noise. Somehow, he needed to block the memory of Pilar’s tears. He slumped on his bed and closed his eyes—another image crashed into his mind where he held Pilar’s hand while she screamed in a hospital bed.
