Chapter 2 One night Benjamin went for an evening walk and ended up by the Swan River. He hadn’t planned it, but with no job and twenty-four hours a day to dispose of, time didn’t mean what it used to, before his good fortune. He’d wandered up one street and down another until he came to a road which happened to lead to the river. It was a pleasant place to be. Calming. It was mid-summer and despite the fact the days were now quite hot, the nights could be cool, especially if there was a sea breeze. He was accompanied by a constant chorus of frogs, hidden in the reeds that grew in great abundance amongst the paperbark trees, and the occasional buzz of an unseen mosquito.
