Chapter 12When Martha woke three hours later, there was a message from Delta on her phone. A photo was attached. “Something came for you,” she wrote. “Whoever sent you this, marry them.” Martha had to blink several times before it all came into focus. A cardboard package sat on Delta’s desk with the name MARTHA SNOW on top of it. She smiled. Roland clearly knew her surname from all the reading he’d been doing about her research, but this last name was as good as her own. Carpenter was an occupational name—like the old school versions of Sawyer, Taylor, Smith—but the tradition had also migrated and there were just as many Computers, Pilots, and Automatons in use now as surnames.
