Chapter 4

Lily sat behind her desk, staring at the heap of documents before her. The office was colder and even more impersonal than ever. It was once lively, but now it seemed to mock her all the time with Nathan's treachery. She tried to focus on her work, but the mind wandered back to the fresh confrontation with Nathan. The evidence that Nathan had given her had haunted Lily since they had met in the park. She must have gone over those documents a number of times to reassure herself about the level of Sophia's duplicity. But as much as she wanted to believe Nathan's earnestness, it was still too raw an emotional wound to suddenly regain trust. Her phone buzzed with a message as she was working. It was from Emma, her old friend and one of her strongest support systems throughout this chaotic time. She had been keen to spend some time with Lily. Eventually, Lily agreed to meet her for lunch. At the coffee shop, Emma embraced Lily warmly. "Hey, you look a little pale. Everything okay?" she asked, her voice ringing with concern. Lily forced the smile. "I'm managing. Just a lot on my plate right now." Emma nodded, sensing the gravity in Lily's tone. "I understand. How are things with Nathan? She sighed heavily. "He has tried making amends. He wrote me a letter, and he showed me the proof that Sophia did lie to him. But even then, if that wasn't enough, it is just hard for me to get over everything." Emma nodded in understanding at her. "It's not easy to forgive and forget. But don't rush into anything. First, work on yourself. You deserve to be happy." Their conversation was comforting, but as they spoke, Emma's eyes occasionally wandered to a man across the café. Of course, Lily noticed that Emma was distracted, but she didn't say anything. She changed the subject and tried instead to enjoy their time together. As they finished lunch, Emma offered to walk Lily back to her apartment. Her disposition seemed lighter on the way. "I was thinking," she began casual as can be, "there's a gala for charity this weekend. You should come. It's a really nice way to take your mind off things." Lily hesitated, knowing the idea of socializing daunted her, but she knew Emma was trying to help. "Okay, I'll think about it. The week went by, and work, together with Emma's invitation, kept Lily's mind busy. She had managed to keep her distance from Nathan all this time, who all along was sending her messages and gifts as a way of atonement. Each of his gestures reminded and made it even harder not to ignore the deep pain. Friday evening, Lily went to the charity gala with Emma. The place was well decorated; the air filled with murmurs and bursts of laughter. Though she was not willing at first, very slowly Lily found it going into the evening very slightly. The gala was a good way to be distracted from her unruly feelings. Mingling with the guests, she noticed one man who kept looking her way. He was impeccably dressed, and that warm smile of his seemed to denote interest. Emma, ever the perceptive friend, nudged Lily and said, "Looks like someone's caught your eye." Lily laughed softly. "I didn't even notice.". The courtesy was returned by the man with an introduction: Michael, a wealthy entrepreneur and major sponsor for this evening. He was suave, charismatic, and Lilac found herself responding to his smooth, easy conversation and seeming genuineness. Throughout dinner, Lily and Michael talked about everything under the sun. Graceful, courteous, and attentive, he made Lilac feel valued and appreciated. Emma smiled knowingly to herself as she watched, very happy that her friend was enjoying herself so much. After the benefit, he asked Lily if she'd like to continue their conversation over dinner. She was excited, but she was also a little nervous when she agreed. Though not really ready to jump into another relationship, he did provide the perfect distraction from her heartache. Their dinner was pleasant, and Lily caught herself laughing, easing up the way she had not for months. Michael's presence relieved her from the pressure she had been under ever since Nathan's arrival. Yet, as pleasant as the evening was, Nathan lingered in her thoughts. Meanwhile, Nathan did not stop looking for a way to fight back for Lily. He hired a private detective to find out more about how Sophia manipulated and discovered even more damning evidence. He kept sending these updates to Lily in hopes that she might see just how far he was really willing to go in order to set things right between them. Later that night, another message from Nathan to Lily, still in a video format: where he spoke with a voice laden with regret as he detailed all the steps he took to reveal the full extent of the deception by Sophia. "I am so sorry for everything, Lily. I have learned the extent of my mistakes and how hurt I have caused you. I do all I can to make it right again. Please, just give me some chance to prove my love for you." The film left Lily confused. She wanted to believe Nathan's sincerity, yet the wounds were still too fresh. She found comfort in Michael's company and sensed his developing feelings toward her, but Nathan's relentless pursuit balanced her emotions on edge. With the days becoming weeks, there seemed to be no ending to this emotional whirlwind. Torn between the comfort of a new friendship with Michael and unfinished emotions for Nathan, Lily remained in an emotional dilemma. Emma continued to be a supportive friend, always urging Lily to follow her heart and make the right decisions that were good for her. The more she wrestled with her emotions, the more suspense heightened. Nathan's persistence had not given up, neither was hers in letting him off the hook, and the emotional roller-coaster ride was exhausting. She knew she had to decide very soon. The more times she had with Michael, the more interactions she had—increased her curiosity about her feelings towards Nathan. She had a war within her heart working so much; she did not know what to do, where to put her past and, at the same time, appreciate the present with the whole heart. Forgiveness was a hard and far road which wasn't obvious where it will end up.
