Chapter 3Alida stood on deck and watched as The Royal Yacht Ischora moved very slowly up the Gulf of Finland. In the distance she could see the Kronstadt seeming to rise out of the sea and ahead she could make out an enormous granite harbour and a long range of tall ships. The smooth blue of the sea was literally covered with vessels. There were guard ships, men of war, frigates, steamboats, packets, floating lighthouses and vessels of all sizes and of all countries. It was all so colourful and beautiful that she drew in her breath appreciatively. Then a cross voice beside her said angrily, “Will you go into the Saloon immediately and talk to the Countess!” Alida turned her face to Mary and saw her cousin looking at her furiously.
