Bert’s plan was simple—his always were, and I was always surprised when they actually worked to get him off base. Personally I think Sherman knew Bert had a soft spot for the ladies, and because he was one of the best lieutenants we had in the company and he got along so well with everyone, even the few POWs who came through our camp, Sherman turned a blind eye to his antics. So I knew whatever he came up with would work. Somehow he’d figure out a way to bribe the supply officer to let him borrow a Jeep one night, and somehow we’d manage to sneak off post long enough for me to meet up with my boy again.
