Here He Comes Again

Lauren's POV Friday night was unexpected. I was having fun, up until I bumped into my ex, an ex I never told anyone about, not even my best friend. I got married at a very young age, it's embarrassing to tell people that I was a divorcee before I even turned twenty-five. When I left Danilo, I didn't just leave him, I left everything behind, I left everything he did to me, I left every memory that pained my heart, I wanted to forget about that part of my life, I blocked it out of my mind and pretended like it did not exist like my life with him was nothing but a dream. I left town and started a new life for myself, a life that didn't include him. I worked hard to put myself through school and now that my life is finally at a place where I am happy, the devil shows up out of nowhere. I didn't even know that Danilo was in New York. That is the thing about living in a big city, there are just too many people, we have probably crossed paths and we didn't even know it. Still, I have to wonder what happened to him. How did he even end up as a club owner? Danilo was CEO of a very large corporation, I never thought that he could switch careers. I spent the entire weekend asking myself about Danilo and what reason he had to act like he did on Friday night. Summer was surprised when we suddenly had to go but it wasn't her I was worried about, no, I was worried about Anthony. He was not happy, not at all. I don't blame him. When I left Danilo, I was young and scared, I was all alone. With no money and no family, the world was much bigger than I was. My father made it clear to me that my marriage had to work, I couldn't go back and tell them that I had failed. A lot has happened in the last five years, things I don't even want to talk about, secrets I don't want to be unveiled. Summer is my best friend but there is still a lot that she doesn't know about me. I have avoided talking about my life for five years and it has been going great, three minutes with Danilo and I am reminded of everything. This is not good for me because I have a meeting with the boss today. I woke up and got a text from my PA that she scheduled a meeting for me. I have been working very hard because I want to make a partner, maybe this is the day that I finally get that promotion I have been working hard for. When I was done dressing up, I ran my hands through my hair and my curls bounced. I put on my Dolce perfume, and minimum makeup and went to the next apartment. I knocked on the door, Summer opened up with a smile on her face, she was on the phone. " I'll be done in a minute, I'll find you downstairs," she said to me. " Fine, if you are not in the parking lot in five minutes, I am leaving without you," I said to her. " I'll be there," she said. She is carpooling with me until her car comes back from being serviced. She loves that car more than anything in the world. A vintage red Lamborghini. I went to the parking lot and I got in the car and waited for her, a few minutes later, she came to the car. " Ready to go?" I said to her. " Yes I am," she said to me. " Good," I said and pulled out of the parking lot. " So, where were you the whole weekend?" I said to her. I last saw her on Friday evening, her phone had been off the whole weekend. I know me and the only time she disappears like that is when she meets a new hot guy. She hooks up and dumps them. When the weekend ends, so does her affection for the guy. " I was with Steve, God that guy is a stallion in bed," she said to me. " Oh okay, that's new," I said to her. " What's new?" she asked me. " You called him by his name and not his body parts, like Mr. Six Pack or Juicy Lips, should I be worried?" I said to her. " I don't know, he is different somehow. I am meeting him for dinner later this evening," she said to me. " As in like a date?" I said to her. " I wouldn't call it a date per se," she said to me. " You are going out to dinner with a man you have been shagging up with the whole weekend, oh honey, it's a date," I said to her. " Well, fine, maybe it's a date," she said to me. " Hmm, you are going out on a date with a man? Now I have seen it all," I said to her. " What? People change. I mean look at you, a year ago, you wouldn't even go out for drinks with a guy and now, you have a boyfriend, a handsome and rich boyfriend," she said to me. " I told you, I didn't have a good experience with my first relationship, I just didn't think that I was ready for a relationship," I said to her. " You know, you never told me about your relationship, I mean it couldn't have been that bad, right?" she said. " It was the worst time of my life, I never told you about him because I don't like to talk about him. I would like to forget that he exists, only if he could let me," I said to her. " Laura... you know that you can't act like that part of your life didn't exist right? I mean what if you bump into the guy? Are you going to pretend like he was never a part of your life?" she said to me. " Yes, I am exactly going to act like that, as far as I am concerned, he doesn't exist," I said to her. We got out of the car and walked to Lourdes, the name of our building. The reception area was busy as usual. We got on the lift and Summer got off on her floor, the lift stopped again on the second floor and someone walked in. I didn't pay any attention to the man who walked in, I was busy on my phone texting my PA to get my coffee ready. I didn't have my dose of caffeine. The lift stopped on my floor and I got off, Lucille was waiting for me with a cup of strong coffee. " Good morning boss," she said and handed me the coffee. " Good morning," I said and took the coffee, I handed her my purse and laptop bag. I took a sip of my coffee. " Run me through my day," I said to her as we walked to my office. " You have a meeting with the boss in his office in thirty minutes, I have been requested to take the minutes," she said to me. " Then that means that we have a new VIP client, someone high-profiled," I said to her. " And you know that how?" she asked me. " I know that because the meeting is in his office and not the boardroom, that means privacy, and the only time the boss wants privacy, is when he has a VIP client," I said to her. I have worked with Owen long enough to understand the way he does things. I know that this client, whoever they are, they have deep pockets, if not, he would have given them to someone else. I went to the office and sat down. The file was on the table, I was about to go through it when Lucille came into my office. " This better be important, I have a file I need to read," I said to her. " There is no time, your meeting has been moved up," she said to me. " What? To when?" I said to her. " Right now, they are waiting for you in Owen's office," she said to me. " Fine, let's go," I said and took the file. I hate walking into a meeting unprepared and right now, I don't know anything about the client or the case. I am good at what I do so I don't want to look like an i***t, especially when I meet a new client. Owen didn't give me time to study the case file. Lucille and I walked to Owen's office and knocked gently on the door. " Come in Miss Roberts," Owen said. I opened the door and went in, Owen was in his office but he was alone. " Good morning," I said to him. " Good morning, please take a seat, our client is on his way," he said to me. We sat down, the door opened and someone walked in. My back was turned so I couldn't see who was at the door. " Ah, our client is here," Owen said. I stood up and turned around to see who was coming in. As soon as I saw that smug smile, I knew who it was and I hated it. Of all the people who could come to this firm for legal services, he is the last person I would think of. " Lauren this is our new client, Danilo Caruso, Danilo, this is my most promising lawyer on the rise, Miss Lauren Roberts," Owen said with a smile.
