14 The earth shook again and one of the nearby funnels burst apart. Chris pushed me chest-first to the ground and landed near me. He looked up at something ahead of us and furrowed his brow. I glimpsed the upper half of a black wolf as it slunk backwards into the brush. His paws were completely covered in the whitish dirt of the area. Chris brushed his lips against my ear. “Stay here.” Chris scrambled to his feet and scooped up a bunch of the dirt. He rushed across the distance to the funnel and threw the dirt on the funnel. The dust extinguished some of the steam and he whipped his head to the fire elementals. “All together now! Throw on the dirt!” The elementals squealed and scooped up the dirt.
