Chapter 5

“I am sorry to hear that. I think you don’t look creepy at all. Dark? Maybe, but I think you are beautiful.” Draco said with a shrug of his shoulders like he was talking about the weather and my eyes widened while my face heated up from his compliment. Nobody ever called me beautiful, except my mom, but that didn’t count. “Uhmm… thanks?” I said, more like asked and he smiled at me. “No problem, but I think you should head home now. Wer…. I mean, wolves move in groups usually, so I think he will be back soon with his friends.” He said and I nodded my head, even though we had been living here in my whole life and I had never seen a single wolf around here before, but then again, I never went into the woods either. “Alright, I will head home. Will I …” I wanted to ask him if I would see him again, but when I looked back at the spot he was standing earlier , he wasn’t there anymore. I just let out a sigh when I didn’t see him anywhere and made my way back home. The run did good for my body and mind, but in the next morning I was hurting all over my body. My muscles still needed to get used to it. The next couple of days were uneventful. I went to school where everyone avoided me or feared me, but I didn’t mind because, at least, they left me alone so I could concentrate on my studies. Every day after school, I went to run to the clearing to get in shape and I stopped by the pond and started stretching as well. I haven’t seen Draco again since that day. I was a bit disappointed about that because finally I was able to talk to someone like normal people do, without them being afraid of me or disgusted by me. However, I have more important things to do, like finding someone who would train me for an affordable price. I didn’t want mom to spend extra money on me, but she insisted that I learn self defence so I could only try and lower the price. It was Friday and I was just in time for my first class. I ran into the classroom breathlessly right before the teacher entered and took my seat in the back. I was sitting in the corner of the room and there were a few empty chairs around me. Kids never wanted to sit too close to me, but now that I pushed Collin, they stayed away from me even more. Maybe it sounded crazy, but I missed our conversations with the principal lately. Since everyone stayed away from me instead of bullying me or trying to get me into trouble, I haven’t been in the principal’s office since the last time he told me that his sons left to go to private school. I couldn’t just go there and tell him that I was coming to talk to him because I was bored. I was even thinking about getting myself into trouble so one of my teachers would send me there, but then I dismissed my silly thoughts. They sounded too pathetic even for me. Ten minutes into the first class, I was already reading my book for my next one because everything that the teacher was talking about was already clear to me. There was a knock on the door, but I didn’t bother to look up until I heard the voice of my friend, the principal. “Sorry to bother you all, but I would like to introduce you all to the new student.” I heard him saying and I saw someone standing next to him, but I wanted to get a better look so I stood up to see who the new student was. “Oh, Raya. That’s really nice of you.” He said and I froze. “What?” I asked because I think I missed a few of his words and some of the students laughed, but when I looked at them they stopped abruptly and looked at their books quickly. That was a first. “I mean, it’s nice of you to show Draco around.” The principal said when he noticed my surprised expression and my eyes widened as I looked at the new guy who was actually grinning at me like he had just won the lottery. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Draco was the new guy and I was totally excited about him being in my class. “Oh, of course, sir.” I said with a smile and sat back down while I tried to hide my blushing cheeks. “Take a seat, Draco and Raya will help you to catch up.” The teacher said and Draco made his way towards me with calculated steps while half of the ladies in the class were looking at him with fear or disgust, while the other half looked at him with dreamy eyes. Draco was a good looking guy, I needed to admit that, so I kind of understood their reaction. “Is this seat taken?” I snapped out of my thoughts when he asked in his deep voice. “Uhhh… no, it doesn’t.” I said and made room for him to sit down. “I didn’t know you would start in this school.” I smiled at him and he smiled back. His light green eyes were vivid and bright. “I didn’t know that you were going to this school either.” He said and took out his book from his bag. He was wearing black and even his bag was black. I didn’t mind because black was my favourite colour apart from red, but I, personally, tried to dress colourful as much as I could because I didn’t want to add to the reasons of their bullies. “I am glad that you are here.” I whispered with a grin and he smiled back at me. “Me too.” He said, and I looked up to see everyone was looking at us and listening to our conversation, but when I looked up, they all turned to the front quickly, which made me roll my eyes at them. “You must be popular in this school, huh?” He asked in a hushed tone and I shrugged my shoulders. “You can say that, but it’s not …’positive’ popularity. It’s more like… they fear me?” I said nonchalantly, but it sounded like an unsure question. “Oh, I see. Interesting.” He let out a chuckle and we paid attention to the teacher until the first class ended. “Do you want me to show you around or let’s just go to our second class? Wait, what is your second class? Can I see your timetable?” I asked him. I was really excited to finally have a friend. “Oh, of course. Here.” He said and handed me his timetable. I read it over and my eyes widened and I looked at him in surprise. “What?” He asked after seeing my expression. “We have all the classes together,” I stated, and he took the paper from my hand to look at it. “Really? That’s cool.” He said with a smile, and it was really cool, but it was strange as well. There was no one from the school who had all their classes with me and Draco showed up out of nowhere and he was in all of my classes suddenly. How? “Yeah.” I said hesitantly, but decided to let it go. I was lucky, I guess, because I will have a friend with me all the time. “So he is the new guy?” Kenzie appeared in front of us with a disgusted look on her face as she eyed Draco. Ella was standing behind her and she looked like she was afraid. “Yes, he is Draco.” I said, while I found him glaring at her with clenched jaw. “I don’t understand why the principal lets bloodsuck…, I mean… why he lets everyone study here.” She said as she glared at Draco and I didn’t understand her hostility towards him. Usually Kenzie was the first to throw herself at handsome guys. “I guess because some of you are different and actually treat others equally as everyone should,” Draco said with a cheeky grin, but I noticed his fist was still clenched by his side. “Whatever. I see you found your people already. However, only her appearance matches yours.” She said smugly and Draco clenched his jaw once again as he was glaring at her. “Sorry Kenzie, but we have somewhere to be.” I said quickly and grabbed Draco’s hand to drag him away from her. I almost dropped his hand from surprise when I noticed how cold his skin was, but I concentrated more on getting away from Kenzie and her stupidity. When we took a turn at the end of the corridor, he pulled his hand away quickly and I stopped and looked back at him. “Sorry about her. She is annoying, just ignore her.” I said as I looked at him, but he didn’t look at me. He was busy pulling on his sleeves to hide his cold hands. “Are you cold? I have an extra sweater in my locker if you need it.” I said, and he looked at me with a smile. “No, I am fine. My skin is always cold.” He said and shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t care about her kind, so you don’t need to worry about me.” He added and I nodded my head with a smile. “Great. Let’s go.” I said, and we continued our way to our next class. It was a bit strange to have someone with me all the time after being alone for most of my life, but I would be lying if I said that I didn’t like having him around. I liked that I had a friend now who understood me more than anyone ever did, because we were similar from inside out. “Ha-ha-ha… did you see his face when the teacher called him out to solve the problem?” Draco asked. We were laughing at one of our classmates as we made our way to the cafeteria after our fourth period. “Yeah, he was shocked and he didn’t even know which class we were currently sitting in.” I said with a chuckle. “Yeah, I can’t even think of an easier question than that was.” He added, and I nodded my head in agreement while my smile hadn’t faded. Draco was smart, maybe even smarter than I was, and that was just another thing in common between us. “Ugh… where are we going?” He asked, suddenly sounding nervous. “We are heading to the cafeteria, we have lunch break.” I told him with a smile and he tensed up a little. “Oh, okay, but I need to go to the bathroom first. I will find you later.” He said and I nodded my head at him and continued my way to the cafeteria. “Where is your v… friend, the new guy?” I turned to see Benjamin, Collin's best friend, standing behind me in the line with his arms folded in front of his chest while he was looking around for Draco. “He went to the bathroom.” I said and turned away from him, but he came closer and I felt his hot breath on my neck. “I hope you know that even the new guy can’t save you from Collin when he returns.” He said and I shuddered. I didn’t want him to think that he had an effect on me, so I turned to him while creating more distance between us. “Collin will forget about me and everything that happened by the time he returns, so I am not worried. Moreover, I would be out of this school by then and maybe living my life in another country, who knows?” I said and he let out a chuckle. “You are really naive. Every time I talk to him, he tells me how much he hates that place. He totally blames you and he always tells me that you will pay when he gets the chance to return, even for a bit. Did you really think he would be away for the whole two years?” He asked with a smug smile on his face and I gulped. No, I didn’t think about that. “Yeah, I thought so, your expression says it all.” He said with a smug chuckle when a shadow appeared next to us. “Is there a problem?” Draco’s voice was deeper and darker than ever as he asked Benjamin. His smug smile faded as he took a few steps back from me and held his hands up in surrender. “No problem at all, buddy. I was just talking to Raven here,” Benjamin said, and his smug smile was back on his face. “I assume you are not her friend if you don’t even know her name,” Draco said with a straight face, and Benjamin looked at me in confusion. They really thought that Raven was my name. “Whatever, it’s our turn.” I said quickly and pulled Draco with me further in the line and told the lady what I wanted to eat. When I was done, I turned to see Draco already sitting at an empty table in the back, exactly at the table I used to sit at alone. “Hey… how did you know I used to sit here?” I asked him and he looked around before shrugging his shoulders. “I don’t know. I figured you didn’t like the crowd, just like me.” He said and smiled at me, which I returned. “That’s right. Aren’t you hungry?” I asked him. He didn’t get anything. “I already ate on my way back from the restroom. I am on a special diet so I can’t eat everything.” He said and took a lollipop out of his bag and put it into his mouth happily. It was red in colour and it painted his lips and tongue red in a second, along with his teeth. “Oh, I see.” I smiled at him and started eating. I was starving since I hadn’t eaten anything all day, but I was already used to it.
