Chapter 4Morning finds them on their horses, whirring along a steep hill. The sky is blue and almost cloudless, there’s a light wind, but nothing to impede their journey. It’s a nice day. They should reach the next village by evening, or, at the latest, by late morning tomorrow. Randy is not delighted by their lack of a guide. In a world where magic is everywhere, there are many beings with the power to transform their surroundings, whether willingly or accidentally. It keeps the environment in a continuous state of change, so a local guide is usually deemed indispensable. But the problem with guides is that they’re not always willing or trustworthy. This isn’t a problem the kids have ever been confronted with, and here Wes is referring mostly to Randy because Mica doesn’t seem to notice
