Introduction by J.M. Snyder
I started JMS Books because some of my older titles were coming out of contract and the publishers I liked to work with weren’t taking previously released books, so I had to find a way to get those stories back into print. I could have self-published them, but at the time some distributors (most notably Fictionwise) had contracts that were more favorable to publishers than individual authors. A friend of mine, Drew Hunt, suggested I start my own publishing company.
Up until then, I had never really thought about doing that. I liked the publishers I worked with, but I had learned a thing or two through the years, so I thought yeah, why not start my own press?
The first few months were a bit rocky, I will admit. I had lofty ideas of what we’d take and basically accepted any story that tickled my fancy. After the first year, though, I felt confident enough to quit my day job and dedicate myself full-time to JMS Books—both the publishing company and my own writing.
Many people think they’d love to be able to write full-time, and when I had a day job, I often thought I’d get a lot more done if I was able to just write, write, write, but most days I’ll admit it’s still a struggle to get words down on paper. The publishing comes first, and there are still times when I’m burned out or tired of a story that’s giving me trouble. But I’m glad I made the decision in 2011 to focus on JMS Books, and I know we’re in it for the long haul.
As we’ve grown, our sales have increased incrementally, and 2014 was a stellar year. Our roster now includes many wonderful authors, and several books we’ve released are consistent sellers. I decided to pull together in one collection the top ten best-selling short stories in the gay romance genre for 2014.
You probably recognize many of the names in this anthology. I hope you also find a few new authors to try out. They all have multiple stories available through us, and many are published elsewhere, too. So sit back and enjoy this collection, then check out the links at the end of the book more reading!
