2014 Top Ten Gay Romance

Introduction by J.M. Snyder I started JMS Books because some of my older titles were coming out of contract and the publishers I liked to work with weren’t taking previously released books, so I had to find a way to get those stories back into print. I could have self-published them, but at the time some distributors (most notably Fictionwise) had contracts that were more favorable to publishers than individual authors. A friend of mine, Drew Hunt, suggested I start my own publishing company. Up until then, I had never really thought about doing that. I liked the publishers I worked with, but I had learned a thing or two through the years, so I thought yeah, why not start my own press? The first few months were a bit rocky, I will admit. I had lofty ideas of what we’d take and basically accepted any story that tickled my fancy. After the first year, though, I felt confident enough to quit my day job and dedicate myself full-time to JMS Books—both the publishing company and my own writing. Many people think they’d love to be able to write full-time, and when I had a day job, I often thought I’d get a lot more done if I was able to just write, write, write, but most days I’ll admit it’s still a struggle to get words down on paper. The publishing comes first, and there are still times when I’m burned out or tired of a story that’s giving me trouble. But I’m glad I made the decision in 2011 to focus on JMS Books, and I know we’re in it for the long haul. As we’ve grown, our sales have increased incrementally, and 2014 was a stellar year. Our roster now includes many wonderful authors, and several books we’ve released are consistent sellers. I decided to pull together in one collection the top ten best-selling short stories in the gay romance genre for 2014. You probably recognize many of the names in this anthology. I hope you also find a few new authors to try out. They all have multiple stories available through us, and many are published elsewhere, too.
