Chapter 5

Before I even got inside the front doors, I received a text. Of course, it's from Donovan, as he's the only person with the number that I know of. I clicked on it to open the message. "Oh, and Happy Birthday" Before I closed the message, a second came through. "Do us both a favor and stay away from that guy on the beach. I'd hate to have to kill him", it read. I just rolled my eyes and replied with a thumbs up emoji, still taking everything in that happened tonight and everything I've learned. Sneaking into the house and going upstairs to our bedroom, I found Skyler waiting up for me. Of course, she wants to know everything that happened tonight. We laid down together, and I started to fill her in on everything. When I got to the park where Callum tried to force himself on me, she sat up in shock. "I'm gonna f**ken kill him!" She said angrily. "Funny, Donovan made the same threat. But no one is killing anyone, Skyler. I had always felt safe with him before tonight, always acting like the perfect gentleman and all. But tonight, I saw a different side of him. I just won't ever be alone with him again." I finished telling her about Donovan and everything he told me his mother did and how I ended up in the human foster system. Then it came time to tell her what I was dreading the most. That I needed to move in with him before the next full moon for my first shift. Laying back down facing me, I heard Skyler ask,"I always thought we'd stick together. Get a place after graduation. But I get it. You have family out there, and a pack you belong to. I'm happy for you, Zadie. Really, I am." I could hear the pain in her voice, but I also knew she truly was happy for me that Donovan had found me and wanted me back home. "We'll figure something out. I promise." I told her as I wrapped my arm around her. I had to find a way for Donovan to let Skyler come live with us. I wonder if he'll be mad to know I told her my secret. That she knows what I am, what we are.... Before I knew it, we both fell fast asleep. Donovan's POV After dropping Zadie off at her foster home, Reggie, Zeke and I headed back to the pack house. It was a quiet ride until I could feel Reggie's unease. "Spit it out Reggie," I told him. He turned in his seat to look at me, "I just have a weird feeling about that Callum guy. Maybe I should stick around to keep an eye on her. Make sure he doesn't give her any more problems." Knowing he has already found his mate, I know he's saying this out of concern and nothing more. But he's right. We need to leave eyes on her, to make sure she's safe. I don't trust the guy either. "You're right, Reggie. Once we get back, find two of your best men and head back to keep an eye on her. Don't make it obvious you're there watching after her." "Yes, Sir." He replied before turning back in his seat. Once we got back to the pack house, Reggie did as he was told, having already mind linked two of his best men who were waiting for us when we pulled up out front. As Zeke and I got out of the SUV, the other two piled back into the car and headed back to watch over Zadie. I felt a relief wash over me knowing someone I trusted with my life would be watching over her. Walking up the steps of the pack house, my best friend, and Alpha, Rex, was waiting for me. Handing me a beer, I noticed he started to sniff the air. Coming closer and closer to me, his eyes started to swirl with black and his voice changed. I could tell he was holding himself back, but from what, I wasn't sure. "You good, Man?" I asked him, kind of leaning away from him, looking him up and down. "Yea, Yea......So, how did it go?" he asked, after shaking his head and clearing his thoughts, bringing his eyes back to their normal shade of golden brown. "She was definitely surprised to see me." I told him with a small chuckle. As we sat on the front porch chairs and sipped our beers, I filled him in on all the details. "You found her where? With who?" I could feel the anger coming off Rex in waves, though he was trying to hold himself back. "Calm down, man. Reggie and two others went back to keep an eye on her. To keep her safe. She will be here and moving in with me before the next full moon. She'll have her first shift here, on pack grounds." "Good, good," he replied after a long pause and seeming to calm down some. "Reggie is mated, correct? How about the others?" "He is. I don't believe the others are though, why?" His mood seemed to change again, his emotions all over the place. What is going through his mind? "Get her here this weekend. Have her bring some of her things along. Let her check out the pack since she has been gone for so long. Get reacquainted with the grounds and the members." He said this all so nonchalantly, like it didn't really matter, but I could tell something was up. After all, he's been my best friend since we were pups. "I gave her a phone before I left. I'll send her a text now, and invite her for the weekend." Pulling out my phone, I sent her a quick message. Me: How about you come for a visit this weekend? Zadie: Sure Me: My guys will pick you up tomorrow after your classes Zadie: I'll be ready "She'll be here tomorrow night," I told him while putting my phone back in my pocket and sending a mink link to Reggie with the plans to bring her home tomorrow after class. Turning to look at Rex, I could tell he was happy with this news, as a small smile came to his face. I know he was close to her when we were kids, so I'm sure he's excited about seeing her again and having her home. Standing, Rex finished the last of his beer, nodded to me in acknowledgment and headed inside. Something is going on with him, but he clearly doesn't want to talk about it yet. I'll find out what it is sooner or later though.
