Snowed In

Nightmares

I wake up in the middle of the night to what sounds like muffled cries coming from Jacks room. I walk over to the door and press my ear to the door.

“No!!” I hear him yell

I knock lightly on the door and say his name but the yelling starts getting worse.

“Get away from me!! NO!!” He screams

I open the door to see Jack tossing and turning in the bed still screaming.

“Jack” I say softly walking to the side of the bed

I put my hand on his shoulder to try to stop him from rolling.

“Jack” I say louder

He shoots straight up in the bed looking at me with wide eyes.

“What the f**k are you doing??” He asks loudly

“I’m sorry, you were screaming I’ll leave” I say

This time he grabs my wrist.

“I’m sorry Camry, I um, I have nightmares from where I served. I didn’t mean to get loud with you” he says apologetically

“No it’s ok, I shouldn’t have come in here I’m sorry” I say

“I’m glad you did” he says “Will you.. would you.. never mind” he shakes his head

“Do you want me to stay in here with you?” I ask him

He doesn’t answer aloud he just nods his head and looks up at me. I’m not sure what emotions I see in his eyes but it almost looks like fear. I walk to the other side of the bed and climb in. We turn opposite ways, I’m not sure about him but I just stare at the wall for a while. I wonder what a big man like him could be afraid of. I wonder what his nightmare was about, what he’s seen to make him scream like that. It honestly breaks my heart and I have the urge to turn over and hold him. It’s almost as if he was reading my mind because he turns over and wraps his arm around me pulling me to him. Just his arm around me makes me look tiny. I link my fingers through his so I can hold his hand. He doesn’t pull away he actually squeezes my hand slightly like he’s letting me know he’s ok with it. I feel so comfortable laying like this with him pretty soon I start drifting off. I could get used to sleeping like this is my last thought.
