For a moment Pandia could hardly believe that she had left her. Then, as Yvette fastened her cape in the front and pulled her veil over her face, she was aware that it was the end. She picked up her own gloves and the worn handbag and Yvette, as if she must obey her Mistress, opened the bedroom door for her. Only as Pandia passed her did she say softly, “Bonne chance, m’mselle!
