The Attack
"Rain, how was training today?" my mother, Luna Serena, asked while she took a small bite of a salad. Always poised and perfect, my mother was the epitome of beautiful. She was tall, around 5'8, very thin with long caramel colored hair that fell down her back and curled at the ends. Her eyes were a golden brown that seemed to sparkle gold when the light hit them at the right angle.
"It kicked my ass today! I am so sore and tired. Rashad was teaching us to fight with twin sais." I replied, as I inhaled the burger the omega cook made special for me.
"Rain! language! My Goddess, you would think I raised a sailor! How are you supposed to be a Luna with a mouth like that! Slow down and chew your food." my mother's eyes flickered with annoyance.
"I'm sorry, mom. I am just tired and forgot my manners." I tried to mimic how my mother was sitting. She noticed and smiled gently.
"Rain, you don't have to be a carbon copy of me. You can be yourself, but have manners when you are around higher ranked clan members. You always have to keep in mind that poise will set you apart from other girls." she still kept the same small smile on her lips.
"Your father should be back in a day or two and we need to get started on which parties you will attend." she said.
"I need to go into town and buy some dresses. I don't have anything pretty." I said, taking a french fry and biting it as delicately as my mother would.
"We can go in the morning as soon as you wake up and have breakfast. I think we can skip Luna training tomorrow." she laughed.
"Yes, mother. I am tired. I think I will excuse myself and head upstairs." I said, trying to sound like a true Luna.
"Rain, I love you. Get good sleep we will be busy tomorrow. Hopefully we will find the perfect dresses for you." my mother stood and kissed my forehead.
"Goodnight, mom!" I threw my arms around her and squeezed her tight.
"Goodnight, my love." she said, as she squeezed me harder.
I ran up the stairs to my room and closed the door. I made my way to my personal bathroom and started a bath. I undressed and looked at myself in the mirror. I have long flowy jet black hair like my father's. My eyes were a piercing ice blue, a gift from the Goddess herself. I shifted my body to see all the bruises that were speckled over my tanned skin. I was thicker, but I didn't mind. I had the perfect hourglass figure. My only flaw that I noticed was being the shortest in the family.
When my bath was ready, I slipped my foot in slowly to feel the temp of the water. My Goddess! It felt so good. I slid down slowly into the bath and let the warm water cover me. My body immediately relaxed and felt so much better. I just laid there letting the water heal my aches and pains. I felt completely at ease and relaxed. This was heaven and I could fall asleep.
I knew my mother would wake me up bright and early, so I hurried and washed my hair and body. I didn't want to get out! I stood up and dried off. I stepped into my room and headed straight for the dresser. I grabbed a pair of panties and a nightgown.
I loved the way the silk felt on my body. I laid in my bed and covered myself up. I couldn't believe I was finally going to be introduced to other packs. That meant I would find my mate. My parents were sure that my mate would be an alpha. My bloodline was too strong to marry beneath me.
Since turning 18, my mother was relentless in preparing me to be the perfect Luna. My mother was perfect. She could rule alongside her husband, take care of her clan, and fight alongside the great warriors. She was determined to make me an even greater Luna.
My body was exhausted and sleep came fast.
My dreams were about finding dresses and trying them on. My mother would nod in approval or wrinkle her nose at an ugly dress. We were having so much fun when I looked at my mom and she screamed. Was that in my dream? Another scream jolted me awake. I rubbed my eyes and tried to focus when my mother threw the door open in my room. She grabbed some clothes from my drawer and threw them at me.
"Get dressed fast, we are under attack!" she yelled at me. I sat on the bed looking at her, but not hearing her.
"Rain, get up now! We don't have much time!" she pleaded.
I grabbed the clothes that were thrown on my bed and dressed quickly. I found my shoes right next to my bed. My mother was looking out of the windows, trying to see what her next move would be. She grabbed my chin and tried to get me to focus on her face.
"Listen to me closely, I need you to run. I am going to lead you downstairs to the patio and when I open the doors you are to run and never look back. Do not stop for anything or anyone, do you understand me Rain?" she said.
"Rain, do you understand?" she repeated panicked.
"Yes, mother, but...." I started to ask her a question, but she cut me off.
"There is no time, run and I will find you. I need you to be brave." she kissed my forehead.
She opened the doors to my room and looked both ways. We descended the stairs. There are warriors and omegas running throughout the pack house. My mother kept me guarded behind her back. Just as she opened the patio doors, two big bears break down the front doors. My feet couldn't move. I had never seen werebears before and they were massive.
Two warriors shifted into wolves.
"Rain, run!" she screamed as the bears charged. My mother shifted into her magnificent wolf. A beautiful silver wolf with piercing magenta eyes. She mind linked me, Rain please, run!
My mother's wolf lunged towards the bears and I turned and ran. I got to the end of the lawn by the fountain and squatted down to make sure I was safe. I looked to see the warrior wolves and my mother fighting. Her wolf was ferocious and put up a good fight. One of the wolves got pinned by a bear, the bear swiped at his neck with its large paw and blood shot up in the air! I gasped.
I could shift and help them, I could shift and fight alongside them. I had to do something! Just as I stood to run back to them, a bear swiped it's paw at the other wolf and broke his neck. The wolf fell limp.
My mother was alone to fight the bears. She jumped on ones back and bit down hard, ripping fur and flesh. She jumped to the floor and stood infront of both. The hairs stood up on her body as she growled ferociously.
I could hear the distant screams of women and children. I brought my hands to my ears to block out the sound. This cannot be happening! There was fighting and fires. Why are there fires? They are burning the houses.
I looked back to my mother and she lunged at the bigger bear, he swiped at her and missed. She tried again and this time he knocked her to the ground. She was hurt. I had to help her. The second bear walked over to my mother and overpowered her. He pinned her to the ground. She tried to bite and get out.
The bigger bear shifted back into a man. A smile appeared on the man's face, he was saying something to my mother and she kept fighting. The bears were just too much for one wolf. He took out a silver knife and cut my mother's throat. Blood drained from her quickly. Her wolf went limp.
I was in shock. I couldn't move, but I knew I had to run. I was not an experienced warrior yet. I took one last look at my mother. The two intruders were gone. I shifted and took off running into the forest. My wolf was crying, this couldn't be happening!
"Rain, where do we go?" my wolf Amaya asks between sobs.
"Amaya, just run!" I cried to her.
Together, my wolf and I ran as far as we could.
The howls, screams, and cries grew distant. All I could see was the man with the knife. The wicked smile that formed on his face as he killed my mother! How did all this happen? Why were there no warnings?
"Sshh Rain, I am here. I will take care of us." My wolf kept the pace, not slowing at all. I had never been this scared in all my life. I had no idea where I was going. I just had to get to safety and then I could come back and find my father. He would make all this right and fix everything. I looked to the moon, why Goddess why?
