Chapter 10 - The Trap

1822 Words
A loud creak made Hayes open his eyes, and he stared up at the guard who was carrying a tray of food. He practically slammed it onto the ground, glaring at Hayes. "Eat," he ordered, crossing his arms. Hayes raised an eyebrow at him. "I said, eat!" The guard snapped, now sitting down in front of him. "You're gonna watch me?" Hayes asked, pretending to be bored and uninterested. "Yes," he replied. "Why?" Hayes frowned, mentally uttering curses. That was the first step of his escape plan, and it was already going downhill. He could not eat that food. He did not know what was mixed in it. "You dare to question me?" The guard hissed. "Benson," Hayes chuckled, "from what I remember, you're not the Alpha. And even if you were, I'm a Rogue anyway. What makes you think I'm not supposed to question you?" Benson narrowed his eyes at him. "The fact that I am the one assigned to guard your cell, and I could zap you with electricity fifteen times a day, pretending that you were being violent," he replied, drawing out a taser from his pocket. "You'll really give me electrical shocks?" Hayes asked in disbelief. "Yes," Benson smiled sinisterly, switching the taser on. He passed him the tray of food. "Now, eat." Hayes sighed, and looked down at the dry pieces of chicken. He knew Benson was told to make sure he had the food. There was no way out of it. And getting electrical shocks would not be worth it, because it would drain his energy completely. Who knew how strong the current would be? He decided that having the food was the smarter thing to do. "I don't like it when people are watching me eat," Hayes muttered, picking up the piece of meat. "That's too bad," Benson shot him a sarcastic smile. Taking in a deep breath, Hayes began to eat, and with every bite, his pace of eating increased. His stomach grumbled as he realized just how hungry he had been, and a tear escaped his eye as he quickly gobbled down all the pieces. For that moment he no longer remembered that he was walking straight into a trap, that the food was just bait, to make him weaker. But he could feel the momentary strength coursing through his veins, and he felt a lot better. "Can I get some water?" Hayes questioned after he had swallowed his last bite. "Sure," Benson gave him a sickening smile, before standing up and casually walking out. The metal door closed behind him with a loud, annoying slam, but Hayes observed how there was no sound of the door locking. Which meant only one thing - that was his cue. Hayes slowly stood up, feeling slightly stronger than earlier, even though his legs were still trembling. He looked at his hands, and willed his claws to grow, and at the same time he felt his eyes change color. He turned back into his pure human form, and made his way to the door. Cautiously, he pushed it open, cringing at the creaking sound it made. Hayes took a peek outside, and when there was no guard to be found, he understood that it was the trap. The trap that he was going to turn into a real escape. A sharp pain suddenly shot through his head, and he realized he did not have much time. He had consumed something dangerous, and its effects would start to kick in very soon. He had to make sure he was far away from the pack house before that happened. Hayes walked out, remembering what Ansel had told him. He was supposed to walk out through the front door, instead of taking the safer route from the back. He was not even sure if he could trust Ansel anymore, but it did not seem like he had any choice. Everything Ansel had told him had been proved correct up until now, so he had to take that leap of faith. He walked through a few hallways, dodging a couple of pack members, before he finally reached the stairs. He stared up at the door that would lead him to the main hallway of the pack house. A place where all the pack members could be waiting to kill him. His ears picked up the sound of footsteps coming from behind him, and thus he knew he had to hurry. Just as he started to climb up the stairs, an excruciating pain broke out in his thigh, making him hiss and fall, tumbling down to the floor. He held onto his thigh and clenched his eyes shut, until the pain suddenly vanished. Taking a few deep breaths, he once again dragged himself up the staircase, practically crawling on his hands and knees. He reached the door and grabbed the handle, using it for support to stand up. His heart was racing in his chest, as he pulled it down, and slowly opened the door. He looked around carefully, and just like Ansel had promised, he had it handled. There was no one there, and he slipped out from the door, gently closing it behind himself. With feathery steps, Hayes walked through the hallway, making sure he was not making any noise. He was about to turn a corner, when he heard footsteps approaching, and he pressed his back to the wall, holding his breath in. He bit his lip, knowing that he would have to kill the person who approached him, but when he saw who it was, he could not do it. So he grabbed her hand and spun her around, pinning her to the wall and tightly covering her mouth, before she had the chance to scream or say anything. Rose looked at him with wide eyes, staring into his glowing red ones. He could hear her heart knocking at her ribs, as she struggled to get free from his hold. "Just keep your mouth shut, and I may not kill you," Hayes warned, and Rose blinked at him in fear, nodding. He placed his other hand behind her neck, and pulled her away from the wall, now taking her with him. Tears rolled down Rose's eyes, as she trembled in fear, while Hayes continued to make his way towards Monica's room. Once again he heard footsteps behind him, and willed his claws out, turning around to attack. "It's me!" Ansel whisper yelled, raising hands up in surrender. "What on Earth you doing with her? You can't take her with you, Hayes!" "I'm not trying to take her with me," Hayes said through gritted teeth. "She saw me." "Hold her tight," Ansel said, rolling his eyes, and extended his hand towards her neck. "Wait, what are you doing?" Hayes asked, pulling her away, as she whimpered. "Putting her to sleep. Don't worry I'm not hurting her," Ansel replied in a hushed voice, before pressing a vein in her neck, making her pass out in Hayes's arms. "Is she okay?" Hayes asked, his eyebrows furrowed together. "She betrayed you, don't forget that," Ansel rolled his eyes, taking her into his arms. "I'm gonna go hide her, you go to Monica's room." Hayes nodded, and turned around to move, when another stroke of pain coursed through him. This time it was much severe, and it occurred throughout his body, making him grunt loudly and collapse to his knees. The pain abated in a second, and an even worse one followed. An involuntary growl escaped his lips, as he placed his hands against his heart, gritting his teeth. "s**t," Ansel muttered, dropping Rose's limp body to the ground and rushing to Hayes. He put his arm around his shoulder, looking at him with furrowed eyebrows. "What's wrong?" "I... I-" Hayes tried to speak, finding it difficult to breathe. "Did you eat the food?" Ansel asked, his eyes wide. Hayes nodded in response. "Crap, Hayes! I told you not to!" "I didn't have another option!" Hayes muttered through gritted teeth, his eyes glowing a bright red. "We need to move, now. They're coming. They heard your growl," Ansel said, helping Hayes stand up. "How... How do you know?" Hayes whispered. "I can hear the shouts and the footsteps. Your senses are not working properly. Come on," Ansel whispered, dragging Hayes through the hall, and finally into Monica's room. Hayes collapsed onto the carpeted floor, while Ansel closed the door and locked it. "What's wrong with him?" A feminine voice asked, and Hayes looked up through his teary eyes to find Monica staring down at him. "He ate the damned food," Ansel replied, moving Monica's dressing table in front of the door. Suddenly, the pain vanished again, and Hayes's senses started working again. He too began to hear the commotion from outside, which made him realize how screwed he was. "What is she doing here?" Hayes asked, standing up from the ground. "It's my room," Monica pointed out, smiling sweetly at him. "Should I kill her or you can put her to sleep as well?" Hayes asked, his claws surfacing. "Excuse me?" Monica raised an eyebrow. "She's a part of the plan, Hayes," Ansel replied, while moving the bed in front of the door as well. "What?!" Hayes asked in disbelief. "You let her in on the plan? How can you even trust her?!" "Hers was the only room with a secret-" "Open up the door!" Alpha Craig's voice boomed from outside, cutting him off. The pack members were all gathered outside, and they were banging on the door. "We got to hurry," Monica whispered, running up to where her bed previously was, and tearing away the carpet from a certain position. "What's she doing?" Hayes frowned. "There's a passage," Ansel replied. "Whoever helps him escape will be shut in the darkest dungeons! Open the door!" Craig yelled again, and this time they saw the dressing table move. Hayes watched as Monica removed one of the large tiles from the floor, revealing a dark tunnel. "Hayes, come on!" She said in a shushed voice. But Hayes didn't move, staring at her dubiously. "Hayes go!" Ansel whispered, pushing him towards the tunnel. "Why are you helping me?" Hayes asked Monica, staring her in the eye. "There's no time for this, Hayes. You need to leave now!" She said, trying to push him towards it, but he refused to move. "Why are you helping me, Monica? Why should I trust you?" Hayes asked. "Someone could be waiting out there to kill me. Why would you risk a life in the dungeons to help me?" "Hayes, hurry!" Ansel now yelled, pushing the bed against the door as the banging became harder and harder. "I won't leave until you answer my question," Hayes insisted. "Fine! I'm pregnant with your baby, Hayes! Now leave before they kill the father of my child!" - - - - - -
