SANDEJAS
Shane brought food so we decided to eat while we talked. After the short conversation we had in the living room, she had to bring something up because the mood suddenly got too heavy. I still couldn’t believe Ally didn’t have any friends even as we began having our lunch. And I couldn’t simply let it go because it’s just really weird.
Even as someone who hit rock bottom and lost hope in the world, I still had one true friend at least. How come a beautiful, successful and perfectly capable woman like Ally didn’t have any? It makes me think a lot. Did she have some kind of traumatic past that caused her to be so closed off?
“When I first met you, you were really very quiet and serious. You’re not really rude or anything bad… I just knew that you’re very closed off so at first, we weren’t really close… It actually took half a year before you somehow warmed up and trusted me… and even then you are still somehow cautious...”
I listened to her talk attentively. “But you said I ended some kind of friendship some time ago. When was that exactly?”
“Earlier this year… I’m not too sure of the exact date but it was also around the time you broke up with Sebastian Sandejas.”
My eyes widened at her words. I wasn’t too sure if I was shocked to hear about the breakup or I was more shocked to know his name. “Sebastian Sandejas? You mean Basty, m- my boyfriend?”
She looked at me thoroughly and nodded carefully. “Actually Ally...” She started to say. My attention was piqued by the tone of her voice. She sounded so hesitant. “I know I shouldn’t butt in on your relationship but I also know I needed to tell you this. I don’t want to confuse you or anything but you have to know the truth too.”
“Okay… What is it?”
“You broke up with Sebastian Sandejas months ago… You’re not together anymore.”
I already heard her say it but now that she repeated it, it only sunk in now. “He said he’s my boyfriend… So, was he lying to me?”
“You haven’t been talking since the breakup. He left the country after that… I don’t know if you’re in some kind of secret communication with him but from what I know, and what you told me then, you’ve called it quits. That was ten months ago, Ally…”
“What...” I can’t believe this… Ally and Basty are already long over but Basty made me believe that they are still together. W- why I mean how could he do that? It was already confusing enough and he just had to lie. Yes, he was probably concerned or even still in love with Ally but that doesn’t justify his lies!
“I know I shouldn’t be the one telling you this but I also cannot keep it from you. You at least should know the relationship you have with the people around you...” My jaw remained tightened. This is so unacceptable. I can’t believe I felt so guilty over rejecting him a couple of times when all along he was lying to me. “But you also have to know that he’s the closest one you got to a friend or family. Compared to me, he knows you better. I didn’t like the fact that he lied to you about your relationship but there’s also no denying that he’s the best chance you got to retrieve your memories.”
“But how can I still believe his words now when he’s been lying to me from the start?”
Can I really trust him when the first thing he did was lie? What if he twists the truth or the memories in his favor. I know completely nothing about Ally! And if I trust his words, who’s to say that he’s not using it as a chance to get her back? I didn’t even know why they broke up!
“Did I break up with him?” Cause that’s how it looks to me. If Ally broke up with him then there’s got to be a reason for that.
Shane nodded. “Yes.”
“Did I tell you why?”
She shook her head this time. “Your relationship with him was kept a secret because you were just starting with your career… but I knew you had a good relationship. That’s why I also didn’t understand why you two broke up all of a sudden...”
“Maybe a third party? He probably cheated on me.” I said, guessing.
“Honestly, I’m not too sure...” Shane admitted sadly. “But there’s only one thing I’m sure of Ally...”
“What is it?”
“It’s that he would never cheat on you. He loved you so much, Ally...” She looked at me with sad eyes. “And I think it’s because he still loves you that he ended up lying to you… He’s probably just desperate to be with you again… From what I know Ally, you never really told him the reason why you wanted to break up...”
“What?”
“You’re the only one who knows.” Shane sighed heavily. “You’re the type of person to keep everything to yourself… You don’t let people in so easily, Ally… It’s like you’re trying to protect yourself from something… so in the end, I could only let you do what you want...”
Just what kind of person is Ally? Why is she so mysterious? What is she trying to keep? Why is it that everything about her is such a mystery?
If the closest people around her can hardly figure her out, what more for an outsider like me?
Will I be able to play the role of Alida Simone Gotiangco if I don’t even know anything about her?
Ally, who are you?
And why of all people, did I have to end up in your body?
“Do you think I can trust Basty?” I asked Shane.
“He loves you. I don’t think he’ll lie about anything else. The guy was just desperate but from how I’ve known him, he’s not manipulative. I think you can trust him.”
I thought for a while before heaving out a sigh. I don’t really have much choice, do I?
Apparently, I badly need him.
He’s the only person who can tell me about Ally.
