It was almost three months that she is in coma. Her body laid on the corner of the Intensive Care Unit beside the people who was dying day by day. Her mother’s crouching at the waiting area, the cold hallway’s air was seeping onto her thin jacket. She aged so much compared to the last three months.
She was awakened by the rushing sounds of running. She stood up straight when she realized that the nurses and doctor were rushing to Kana’s side. The monitor that displays her vital signs was beeping. The numbers were dropping rapidly.
She cannot help but to cry. She dialed Sasha while the doctors were trying to revive her daughter. Sasha was half-running after thirty minutes. It looked like she was disturbed on the middle of her sleep. She immediately hugged the poor mother.
“She’ll be alright, Mildred.” Sasha whispered as her tears welled up on the side of her eyes.
Mildred sobbed quietly. She was too afraid that Kana might hear her.
“Kana may be a little dumb but she’s a fighter. She can get through this.” Sasha comforted Mildred.
The doctors were now using defibrillator. The nurses were pumping air onto her body. They prayed so hard to revive the young woman. After another thirty minutes, she saw when the doctors stopped reviving. Mildred rushed to the glass window to see that the numbers on the monitor’s stabilized.
The door opened. The doctor removed the protective gear he was wearing. He nodded at them and smiled a bit to comfort the ladies.
“She’s stable for now but we have to monitor her. The seizures were caused by the new dosage prescribed to her. But her nervous system is very responsive. If she will be like this for three more days, we can transfer her to a regular room.” Dr. Kansas said and explained something on the charts.
Sasha sat down with a big relief on her chest. They almost lost her. She was too guilty for riding her bicycle too fast that day. If she just waited for Kana, she would not be in here. The accident happened too fast. She just looked away and in a split-second, Kana was hit by a ten-wheeler truck and she flew so far that caused all of this.
A week had passed and now, Kana’s on the private room. Mildred had to report to her job today, so Sasha was the one who was with her. She was busy watching the television while eating chips to pass time. She jolted on her seat when she heard faint coughing.
One after the other, Kana’s eyes opened. Her cough became louder and louder like she was gasping badly for air. Sasha threw the bag of chips to help her friend. She buzzed for the nurses. She offered a bottle of water.
Kana hurriedly drank it. She was heaving too much like she cannot breathe. Sasha rubbed her back until the door opened. Dr. Kansas walked past through the door. He immediately checked her vitals. Kana was too confused looking at all the people on the room.
What can you expect when you just suddenly woke up from a deep sleep? Sasha dialed Mildred’s phone. She missed the moment her daughter woke up.
“Do you know who you are?” Dr. Kansas asked her in a calm voice.
Kana nodded.
“I am Kana. And she is Sasha.” She pointed at Sasha.
Sasha tried to stop her tears building up at the edge of her eyes. She cannot believe it. She remembers herself and the little details around her. Dr. Kansas excused himself after the thorough check-up with the nurse.
Kana looked at the door closing on them. Sasha jumped onto her and hugged her. She groaned in pain. Her body was sore all over. She was kind of light headed from laying too much.
“Oh, thank God you are alive! You made me worry too much.” Sasha cried.
Kana smiled and nodded. It was weird. She felt like it was only a few days but Sasha told her everything that has happened. She missed their graduation day.
She had a weird dream. She saw a blonde woman looking at her from a far while she was being tossed at the sky. She had a long hair and wearing a white flowing dress. She was too beautiful. She lifted a finger and suddenly, the time stopped. Then, she opened her eyes and saw Sasha and Dr. Kansas.
The door opened. Rushing was her mother, Mildred. She was crying and hugged her tightly. Kana cried and hugged her mother back.
“You came back…” she cried.
Kana stifled a laugh.
“Of course, I cannot leave you.” Her tears rolled on her cheeks as she said those words.
They were not that affectionate mother and daughter before. But the accident changed them. Kana grew up mostly alone on the house because her mother was having double jobs to raise her. Her father left them before she was even born so it was only her and her mother.
Mildred showered her with kisses and wiped her tears when she suddenly stopped. Shock was evident on her eyes. It was like she’d seen a ghost. Sasha looked at her weirdly.
“Oh my…” Mildred whispered.
Kana watched her mother and looked at Sasha. Mildred looked at her face intently. Sasha stood up and mirrored Mildred’s actions. She gasped and covered her mouth when it dawned on her.
“Guys, you are scaring me.” Kana stuttered.
“How can this happen?” Mildred said and nudged Sasha. “Call Dr. Kansas.”
Dr. Kansas came back. He was holding a flashlight and checked Kana’s eyes. He was silent that made Mildred fidgety on her seat. Sasha was observing them. He whispered something on the nurse which the latter jotted down on her chart.
“Everything’s seems normal, Mildred. It was unusual but it can be the medicine’s side effect on her body. She can see clearly and she was absolutely herself. She remembered every detail.” Dr. Kansas said.
Mildred bit her lower lip.
“Are you sure she won’t go blind in the future, Dr. Kansas?”
“We’re not sure about that. But Kana should protect her eyes. We’ll run some test with the Ophthalmologist to make sure.”
They nodded. Kana cannot believe what happened. Her eyes turned blue. It was brown before the accident but she’s sure that she was herself. It was her and no one possessed her. She touched her eyelid and try to feel if it was real.
“This is unbelievable. I never noticed it before. I was to overwhelmed that you woke up to notice every little detail.” Sasha exclaimed and watch her reflection on the mirror as well.
Kana sighed. It was odd and alarming.
“Do not stress yourself, Kana. You just woke up. Besides, the blue eyes suit you.” Sasha grinned to make her feel better.
