TWELVE He heard the front door close and listened to Sam taking the girls to the car, driving them away. The silence that followed was as warm and as comforting as the blankets under which he lay. He rolled over, let out a long sigh and gave himself an extra thirty minutes. Later, after a leisurely breakfast, Steve scanned the piece of paper he had used to scribble down the name of Knills’ private detective. Not too enthusiastic about using his bonus day off visiting a stranger, despite Knills giving him a generous payment which would cover an entire week’s pay, he guessed he may not get another chance, so he got into his car, switched on the satnav and drove off.
