TEN Bea didn’t want her to stay at the party. After checking with the other adults, Sam kissed Bea and left. On the drive back to the house, she gripped the wheel, trying to stop herself from shaking. All day Friday she’d sat at the top window, hoping he’d come, but he didn’t. No sign of life from the dark house at all, so now, reinforced by the girls’ absence, she made her decision. She’d go and visit Knills. A cold wind wrapped itself around her ankles as she stood under the porch and shook her shoulders, freeing her clothing from the worst of the rain.
