A Shitty Day (two)

Sierra hurried to her car. She was about to start the engine when she remembered she didn’t bring office clothes with her. She just brought a pair of a hoodie and a pair of jogging pants because it was her rest day. She’s even on her sneakers.              Ah, to hell with her! I’m taking a shower first! She exclaimed but at the back of her mind, she had dreaded the additional hours she would be forced to render for overtime.              “It’s okay, Sierra. Just hold it in for a few days more. Once, you closed the deal with the restaurant’s buyer, everything will be settled and you can then say goodbye to that freaking old maid and find a new job!”               She drove happily for a moment, thinking about the day she could finally raise her middle finger at Libby. She could already imagine her reaction would be priceless.               Lailane would be laughing her ass out for sure. She knew how much her best friend shared mutual hate for Libby. She used to work for her too but resigned when she couldn’t take her anymore. She was not as lucky though. She couldn’t afford to lose her job now with all the debts she needs to pay.              She remembered Lailane’s messages. She must be worried sick. She decided to call her. She docked the phone on the dashboard and put on her headphones. She might be a total ass on the road but a bitter experience taught her not to hold on her phone while driving.               “Hey! Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for your reply!”              “Just somewhere.” Jeez, I’ve been gone overnight and I feel like I’m on a missing person list.               “Don’t tell me you still went to that race, Era!”             “I didn’t.” She smirked knowing well what her best friend would say next.            “Oh, you certainly did! Why are you so stubborn? You go on nagging Joshua for being that way and yet you’re no better!”             “Why did you even asked when you won’t believe me?”             “Because I know you Sierra Lawrice! And didn’t I tell you I could give you the money you need to pay Joshua’s debt to that Mafia boss? Why do you always choose the hard way? What if something happened to you?”              “Look, we’ve been over it so many times. I won’t take your money to pay off that debt. You’ve already helped me too much. I appreciate the thought babe, really. But it just won’t work. That’s a hundred grand, for crying out loud! I can’t just take it from you, knowing that you’ve worked your ass off to save that for your wedding! You don’t even plan to lend it to me, you crackhead!”              “Cause that’s what families do! You’re more than my BFF. You’re my sister. And we don’t let our family down right?”              That made her heart swell with pride. She may be in a s**t hole but she knew she'll never be alone. But that didn't make her change her mind.               “Yes, and family don’t feed off of each other. Case closed. Besides, I won!I’ve already paid that in full so there’s no reason to argue about it anymore.”              She heard Lalaine sighed in resignation and she smiled. She knew she wouldn’t insist. What her best friend said was true. She is as stubborn as a bull. There’s no way she would change her mind once she’s decided.               “What’s that news you were telling me about on your message?”              “Ah, Yes. Eric wanted me to live with him since our wedding is not a month away. I-I said yes, so you’ll be left in the apartment.”               “I’m cool. Don’t worry about me. Sooner or later you guys will be living together, have children, start your happily ever after together, so I’m ready to be left behind.” She joked about feeling hurt.               “Sierra... don’t say it like that!” And there she was, crying! She chuckled softly.              “Stop crying! I was just kidding!” she snickered at her.              “You meanie!” She sniffed. “But seriously, Eric suggested that we should put my unit for rent. But I said no because I wanted to leave that apartment to you. You can stay there with Joshua so you won’t have to pay for his boarding house.”               “Is that how he managed to make you say yes to living together?” She pried knowing too well that Lailane wouldn’t easily agree on the setup. She wanted to be a virgin bride for crying out loud! Living with her fiancee surely would put that in jeopardy. Why he’s all over her friend already!              “No... I-i, well you know how he gets jealous over our closeness right? So I just decided to give in. Besides, we’ll be married soon. What’s there to lose?” Lailane tried to sound ecstatic but the loneliness in her voice didn’t escaped Sierra.              “Your dream of becoming a virgin bride? Look, are you a hundred percent sure about this?”             “Yeah...”             “Okay. Up to you. But hey, you don’t have to worry about us. I could find a room to rent near the office and Joshua could stay at his boardinghouse. Put the apartment on rent. I don’t want you guys having a problem because of us. And besides, it’s practical, you’ll need the money after the wedding.”             “But...”             “End of discussion babe. I’ll call you later. I’m in a hurry. Ms. Old Maid is calling me for work. Bye!”              “Wait! Have you checked on Joshua already?”             “Went to the hospital earlier but I wasn’t able to see him.”             “Oh, okay. I’ll go there later and bring some homemade food. He said he can’t take the bland hospital food anymore.”             “Blah, he’s just being a baby. Stop spoiling him so he can move on from crushing on you. He’s already broken-hearted when he learned you were marrying Eric.” She rolled her eyes remembering how his brother threw up and messed with  their carpet getting himself drunk. That was the last time she’d seen him without a cast.           “Oh, I can’t help that, he’s my li’l bro too. Besides can you blame him, you got a hot BFF.” She giggled on the other line.           “Whatever! Gotta go. See you later” She ended the call before Lailane could say another word. She parked her car in front of their apartment then went out.              Sierra sighed heavily after opening the door. She’ll miss this place. She’ll miss her best friend. And she’ll have to work double to pay for the rent once she’s out of here. Speaking of work. She had to hurry. She can’t lose her job now.           She removed her clothes and carried them to the laundry basket before she went to the bathroom. She set the water temperature to warm, stayed under the shower for a moment and hoped it’ll wash away her worries. She remembered the guy on the wheelchair and his light grey eyes, and she felt her face burn with embarrassment.            I won't see him again, he didn’t look like a person to always go on a public hospital. She thought but why did she feel disappointed.           Maybe it's because she’s tired and it's already been one hell of a shitty day.           She didn’t know it’s about to get shittier.
