Mina Gourmet
I already knew it was a bad idea when I pushed into the revolving back doors of the club in time to see Pompeo’s tree-like silhouette waiting for me.
His eyes were unreadable and bright behind the square-rimmed glasses he pushed up against his nose and I thought I caught the flash of a satisfied smile on his face before it was quickly replaced by a scowl.
“Gourmet. I thought I’d have to set the hounds to haunt you down. What in god’s name are you wearing?” Pompeo hissed icily and my spine straightened in alarm before I glanced around to see my frightened face in the mirror opposite.
I was as pale as a witch’s bum, even with the bronze gold makeup lining my eyelids and the thick swat of rogue I’d dusted hastily my high cheekbones.
My dress was a startling frilly gold piece I’d lifted off of Stacy’s suitcase, realizing too late that it was several sizes too small, cutting off high enough in my thighs to be indecent and squeezing tightly around the orange-sized cleavage I managed.
“M-my dress?” I repeated, and the withering glare the elite wolf gave me made me feel like the most monumental i***t to ever walk Athena’s green earth.
“Well there's no time is there, this would just have to cut it…quickly Gourmet,” He snapped, turning to sashay through the dark corridors where the other dancers were quickly getting dressed, with the overhead disco lights flickering between low and full beam.
I hadn't told Tito yet that I was taking the offer despite his disapproval. I was doing what was best for us.
One dance, and we’d have enough to feed for weeks even. I would try hard to make the elite beast dislike me and hope to the goddess he didn't ask to take me with him.
“Remember, Gourmet. One mistake and you're out.” Pompeo hissed before his claws scraped against my back as he shoved me forward, into the waiting room where the guard I’d seen earlier spun to face me.
Shit!
“H-Hello? I’m—”
“Miss Wilhelmina Gourmet, a pleasure to make your acquaintance. You must forgive me…I fear the Viper Alpha is in a terrible rush,” The pretty wolf hissed distractedly, pausing as if to check the hallways before branching off again, deeper into the back rooms.
How the hell am I ever going to make my way out of here?
Was I even meant to make it out alive? And what the hell did he mean by the Viper Alpha?
“Stupid…stupid Mina,” I cursed, slapping myself mentally when I realized just who he was.
The black uniform was only worn by the Viper Pack wolves. Of course.
I’d seen enough of his fellow elites decimating my kind only days ago and I suddenly liked him much less than I already did, eyeing his broad back with something close to disdain.
I shook my head, forcing my brain to drag along the winding corridors hastily, no matter how determined it was to be left behind.
“What does your Alpha want from me?” I wheezed, forcing the fancily dressed wolf to stop and face me, noting for the first time that his human eyes were an unnatural shade of amber…almost bronze.
If he was this beautiful, then how much more unbearable would it be looking at his Alpha?
“A night of distraction, Miss Gourmet, for a chance at a better life for you. That’s all I’m asking,” He rasped, clasping his hands behind him as if waiting for me to refuse him.
There was no chance of that when Pompeo arranged this himself…no…he looked like the kind of wolf to dismember wretched outcasts like me for every quip he lost.
“I’m ready,” I whispered, brushing my sweaty palms over the coarse material of the dress and catching the guard’s eyes dip to my chest for a split second before he stretched a thin smile over his face and bowed away from the giant black door.
“Please Goddess, let him be a weak old fart who would require nothing more than air kisses,” I prayed inwardly, pushing the door open and blinking into the sudden darkness that stabbed into my sides like poisoned knives when I pushed into the back rooms.
The VIP section.
“Hello?” I called again, gasping when the roar of fire came only feet away from me before the electric whizz of the overhead lights came, flickering the luxurious room into view before the drop-down chandelier settled with a steady electric humming.
What the hell was going on?
The moisture dried from my mouth when I took in the towering wolf standing with his back to me and gazing out the big singular window of the room.
My mouth fell open at the chords of muscle and inked skin I could see on his forearms, where he had rolled his sleeves back, the white plume of smoke from the cigar he held in his other hand hanging like fog around his face.
A king. I knew almost instantly that he couldn't be anything less, and my knees buckled as everything inside me screamed for me to turn around and bolt out of the room before he could turn to face me.
He didn't so much as stir when I shut the door behind me with my heartbeat pounding in my ears as I watched him stub out the remainder of his cigarette and finally turn to face me.
“Your Highness–” I started before stopping shut when the familiar bark of his baritone stopped me cold.
“Lets get this over with quick.” He spat, before I caught the way his body stiffened when he recognized me.
Those chilling dark blue eyes, the tan, inked skin with a snake tattoo curving around his right ear, and the jagged white scar running across his eye from where I’d cut him myself.
Malakai Bloodrot.
The beast who had shattered my heart all those years ago was standing before me now as the Alpha of the pack I hated the most. The Vipers. The same ones who teamed up with other wolves and killed my parents and every other human and halfling in all of the Undercity.
“You.”
It was all he said, but something about the lack of remorse in his voice made me snap.
How dare he show himself after all these years?
How dare he try to buy me after everything he’d done to me?
I starved myself and nursed my broken heart for years! And yet he went on to become Alpha and treat me like I never even existed? Like WE never happened?
I felt my hands close around the dagger I hid in my boots before the room blurred around me as I rushed toward him, swearing to take him down with me to Hades gates.
