CHAPTER 1. Their Visitor
At 11:30PM in the hospital, the lights were dim illuminating lights from the corridors. The usual bustling hallways had become quiet and the only thing which could be heard were faint footsteps from doctors and nurses who were doing their rounds, also the beeping from the monitors and the coughs and groans from patients.
I tucked my hair which was getting in my face while I checked the blood pressure of my patient who had passed out due to fatigue and dehydration.
"You will be discharged soon, I assure you." I told her as she had been questioning me since I entered her room.
"Now get some rest, okay?"
"Thank you Nurse Vivian. You're literally the sweetest person I have met in this hospital or any other hospital. " Her once pale face was slowly getting its color back and that made me happy.
"You're the most lovely kid I've ever met. You need to take more care of yourself, Devi. You had your mother extremely worried about you." Devi bit her lip with a look of guilt on her face.
"But you don't have kids of your own Nurse Vivian?" I smiled at her question shaking my head.
"No."
I was pleased at how alert she was compared to when she was just brought in. Her blood pressure, temperature were getting back to normal. She was for sure going to be discharged tomorrow all she needed was good rest and water.
"Aww. I think your kids will be so lucky to have someone like you as their mother."
Me? Kids? At this time of my life? Hell No…I don't even have a man and sure as hell not looking for one. I chuckled at the thought.
"Good night Devi." She waved lightly and I exited.
"Good night Nurse Vivian." I shut the door behind me slowly.
I rubbed my shoulder and twisted my neck hearing the cracking noises, I exhaled out of exhaustion. I was working a double shift and hadn't closed my eyes for even a second.
I walked towards the nurse's station meeting two other nurses, Mel and Rejoice, who were standing and gossiping as usual.
"Hi Vivian." They chipped in unison, giving me a wide smile. I waved lazily and returned a faint smile.
"So tell me why a bunch of men just walked into the hospital."
"Yeah…I think it's a celebrity of some kind." They discussed while I sat down in front of the computer updating my patient's files and filing some paperwork.
"Hi babes." I rolled my eyes discreetly recognizing that voice that irritated me to the marrow. I blinked repeatedly fighting the sleep which was begging me to just shut my eyes for a minute.
"What's up with you Aubrey?" One of the two nurses asked her.
I stared up at Aubrey for a split second and just as I expected we made eye contact. I broke the eye contact and she hissed loudly.
"I'm chilling…I plan on leaving soon. I'd rather become a maid than walk around throughout the night taking care of these people." Through the corner of my eye, I saw Aubrey make a disgusted face and the two nurses she was discussing with laughed at that.
"I can't believe you guys are sisters. Y'all are literally the opposite of each other." Mel stated.
"Nah.. for real..you literally just clocked in and you're about to clock out. You got a man or something?" Rejoice asked and Aubrey scoffed, laughing humorlessly.
"First of all, she's not my sister…she's simply an opportunist who goes around trying to steal other people's men since no one had ever loved her." I pursed my lips brushing off the sting in my chest.
"Secondly, I just might have bagged myself a handsome wealthy man." The two girls squealed.
"What are you three doing? I'm so sure y'all haven't done your rounds yet." The head Nurse, Mara, pointed out and I heard them groan.
"Get to work!" She dismissed them, they headed their separate ways in a haste knowing how strict Nurse Mara was. She wasn't one to play with.
I giggled at them but stopped as soon as Nurse Mara gave me a look.
"I so want to tell you to get some rest but I need you to take a look at the patient that arrived tonight." I nodded standing up.
"Deluxe Room at the top floor of the hospital." I thought back to how luxurious those rooms were. Maybe there was truly a celebrity in the hospital? I hope it's someone I know…I got excited at the thought. I shook it off knowing damn well excitement had only brought my regular heartbreaks.
As the elevator closed, I realized I had no information on the patient nor his condition. I let out a deep sigh resting on the wall on the elevator, I brought out of my pocket a small white container and popped a pill to keep me awake.
I smiled feeling the effects of the pill while strolling down the hall getting ready for the unexpected.
I furrowed my eyebrow confused seeing about 10 guards at the door, all wearing a black shirt and black cargoes or jeans. They all had a mug plastered on their faces looking straight ahead.
When I got in front of the door, I expected them to let me in but they blocked the way.
"Excuse me, I'm here to treat your boss or whoever." I frowned at their attitude.
"Ma'am we will need to check you." He stated and I looked at him like he had grown two heads.
Who the hell was this man in there? And why would they think a nurse as tired as I am has the energy for this?
"All I am here to do is my job, so please.." They blocked my way again as I tried to move to the other side.
I smacked my lips and took a deep breath to try and calm myself down.
"I can empty out my pocket, but I refuse to allow y'all grown men feel on me." I tried to sound stern but they didn't even flinch nor care.
"Ma'am you need to do your job as we perform ours." After much deliberation, I huffed allowing them to pat me down.
"You may head in." The one who seemed to run things said and I rolled my eyes walking in.
I was taken aback when I entered into the room meeting it pitch black.
"Hello?" I tried to find where the light switch was but as soon as I took a step, I felt a presence and someone grabbed me roughly pressing himself upon her.
"What the hel—" I got cut off by the next move which might just have changed my life forever.
