“Break? You’ve got to be kidding.” She jumped from the bed, dragging the sheet with her for cover. As she escaped to the bathroom, she saw his lecherous smile again and stuck out her tongue.
While Tony absently drummed his fingers against the arm of the chair, Olivia washed her face and peed. By the time, she returned to the room, she had her ammunition all ready. “How in heaven’s name can I take a break with so much happening on this case?” she started in. “It might be a while before Munson trusts me in court again. In the meantime, I’m going to be sure that he knows who put this prosecution case together, and who’s the best one to argue in court. Taking a break is only going to confirm my weakness, and I won’t do that. Besides, I have no clue about this mysterious something you think is troubling me so much.”
“Look in the mirror, Liv. You’ll see it. There’s something going on with you you’re not saying.” The look on her face suggested he was right. Although that look quickly vanished, it was all Tony needed to confirm his suspicions. “Your career is on the line. Cases like this don’t come around often, and they are big prizes when they do. But you f**k up, you’re apt to cost your career more than help it. Remember, you’re much more expendable than you’d like to think. I wasn’t the first to suggest you take a break.”
“Munson sent you?”
“No, he didn’t send me.” He shrugged. “Not specifically.”
She stared into his eyes, reading in them everything he failed to say. Her mood softened, and for the first time since he’d sat down next to her in the bar, she displayed a rare degree of vulnerability that was quite uncommon when she wasn’t in the midst of s*x.
She sank down on the end of the bed with the sheet still pulled around her. “Listen, Tony, thanks for tonight. I really needed this. And, trust me, I have my thoughts about what to do at work. I think I can salvage this, I really do. We’ll see. If it doesn’t work out, well,” she smiled genuinely, “I may be taking a long break from the prosecutor’s office.”
She grinned enough to have him smiling back. “Okay, honey, I sure hope you’re right.”
