Chapter Eight Discoveries I woke very early the next day and knew that Frau Baxter had left the shutters open before retiring, for although the mask I wore left me blind, I could feel the warm sun on the back of my helmeted head, the only exposed part of my body it could reach as the rest of me was still covered by the rubber over-sheet. This warmth gave me hope that the day would end with my freedom and perhaps by the end of it I might once more walk outdoors, unencumbered, unfettered!
