Chapter 3Rebecca jolted out of bed. She realized she was still on her couch, her neck stiff from lying back against the headrest without any kind of support. Her mouth was tangy and gummy from being open all night and not having brushed her teeth. A plate of half-eaten smile fries was in front of her, along with Josie’s head in her lap. She wanted to bolt upright but was soon dizzy from sitting in place. She groaned. “What time is it?” she asked. Josie didn’t move. Rebecca placed a hand over her mouth, felt hot breath there, and relaxed a little. She considered all of her moves before she gently picked up Josie’s head and then laid it back down on the couch cushions. Her gait was shaky as she stood, and she made a bee-line for her kitchen sink and water before she did anything else. She
