Chapter 12: No More Lying

1059 Words
Trinity Alpha Chris requested to meet with me, so I got up early the next morning and hurried to his office. I was curious about what else he had to say. I wanted to ask him questions about my mom; things she would never tell me. For some reason, I felt like it would make me feel closer to her.  When he called me into his office, my mind changed as soon as I saw his face. He looked like he hadn’t slept at all. There were bags under his eyes. He had his chin resting in his hands. His hair and clothes were disheveled. I had never seen him in such a condition.  I took a deep breath and slowly approached one of the chairs across from him. It was silent for a long, awkward moment.  “Alpha Chris?”  His eyes finally met mine. He sat up straight and released a sad sigh.  “I should tell you the entire truth. My son is on his way down. I think it would benefit you to have him close by.” I nodded, instantly confused about the situation.  Christian entered the office just a few seconds later. He sat beside me, staring at his father with the same confusion I felt.  “Trinity, as I told you before, your mom and I were mates. I cared for her deeply, not just because of the mate bond.” He paused and made a pained face.  “The reason Alpha Morris challenged me is because I had told Clementine— Luna Clementine, that I wanted her to run away with me.”  I audibly gasped and covered my mouth. Christian stiffened beside me.  “I-I don’t understand. Why? She was mated to my dad …” “She was my mate first. I couldn’t get past that. We were destined and it ate me alive every day that I rejected her. It was a foolish mistake.” “Dad, what about mom?” Christian was turning red. I could feel his pain and anger.  Alpha Chris sighed and dropped his head. He took a minute before answering.  “I care about your mother, but I would be lying if I said I ever loved her.”  Christian’s shoulders dropped. I placed a hand on his back and began to rub him soothingly. “Son, I love you and Paige. You are two of the greatest blessings ever bestowed upon me. I will never regret you.” Christian stood suddenly, swiping his hand quickly across his face. It was then that I noticed he was crying.  “Where’s mom?” He looked full of rage, but all I could feel was hurt.  Alpha Chris sighed again and sat up straighter, looking Christian in his eyes.  “She left. She found out the truth and she left.”  I thought back to their arguments when they thought no one could hear them. Luna Marjorie was talking about my mom. It made sense why she hated me so much. But then again … “What truth did she find out about?” Alpha Chris raised his brows.  “She found out why your father challenged me.” “But Luna Marjorie knew all this time about my mom?” “She knew Clementine was my fated mate. That was all.” I nodded.  “You ran mom off over your regrets?!”  “Watch your tone with me.” Alpha Chris’s Alpha tone made me jump a little. Christian bowed his head.  “Wait in my room. The door is unlocked. I need to speak to my dad privately.” I frowned, but stood slowly. I watched Christian as his jaw clenched and unclenched, his fists balled up at his sides. I hoped he didn’t do anything that would hurt us both in the long run. I understood how he felt, but he needed to think about our future. We’re supposed to live happily ever after.  I was zoned out as I walked down the hall. So far, he was just angry, from what I could feel. I opened the room door and locked it behind me. The last thing I needed was anyone barging in here. I sprawled out on Christian’s bed and sighed in content. It was plushy and soft, like a cloud.  My eyes fell on a small gift box sitting on his nightstand. I wondered what it was as I sat up. It was probably a late birthday gift. I inspected it for a few more seconds and shrugged, taking my phone out of my back pocket.  Christian was calmer, but he was still mad and sad. I decided I would give him a massage when he got to his room.  I glanced at the box again. Just as I reached for it, Christian stormed in.   “I hate him!” He was growling and angrily pacing the floor. I was still for a moment. Carmen kept pushing me to get up and comfort him. I finally shook myself out of the trance I was in and stood, almost losing my balance. Christian was beside me in a split second with his arm around my waist.  I looked up into his pool blue eyes. His breathing began to slow.  “I can’t believe he lied all this time. My poor mom.” I sighed, feeling bad for him.  “Can you call her? I’m sure she would love to hear from you. This can’t be easy for her.” He pulled me close against his body and buried his face in my hair.  “How could he do this to us? I used to look up to him. He was my hero. Now everything just feels like a big lie.” I tightened my arms around his waist. I wasn’t sure how to comfort him. It felt awkward. “Just let him cry. That is all. Rub his back a little. Don’t be weird.” I internally rolled my eyes, but listened to what my wolf said and started lightly rubbing his back. He melted a little more in my arms as his sobs became louder. My heart ached for him. Carmen started whimpering, pestering me about Maceo. I don’t know how long we stayed there, but eventually, we cuddled under his plush, white comforter and fell asleep.
