The Kiss

Kathy POV         Time flew by so fast, and I had been living here for two months. I started my job as a nurse in an orphanage about a month ago. I met Lindsey, David’s fiancée, and she was so happy to turn over her role to me as a Nurse. She said she needed some time to prepare for their wedding as they were planning to celebrate it in California, where her family and most of David’s family lived.         Ecstatic that I finally have something to do, I spent most of my time at Belinda’s place when I wasn’t working. She kept asking me to move into their home since Miles has his own penthouse now. I declined since I’d rather have my own personal space, I loved Belinda, and as much as I want to move in, I just can’t. It was still Miles home, and I didn't want to bump into him every time he would visit his Mom and dad.         I was trying to avoid seeing him. I still cringed at what I did to him last time. I confessed my love to him out of my anger. I hoped he would forget it. Though it was inevitable, we met again two weeks ago when he visited his Mom and dad for dinner. Awkward as it was, but I tried to behave and be myself in front of him. It was a formal dinner for us.         We didn’t talk that much while we were eating. It was mostly Belinda who did the talking and bragging of the flowers in the garden that I helped her to plant or when we redecorated the house. I was enjoying my meal when suddenly Miles sliced the awkward atmosphere between us.          “So, Kathy, How’s your new job?” he asked, looking at me.         He was sitting opposite my chair. I was busy eating my dinner looked at him.         “Uhm... it's good. I am enjoying it. It’s far from what I’ve done back home, where mostly I took care of elderly people, but now, taking care of kids and handling them seems a new challenge for me.” I proudly answered him.         “That’s good to hear, and I hope they’re treating you well,” Miles replied         “Yeah, they’re nice to work with, and the children are well taken care of. We are planning to do a thank you program. We will be inviting the people or the head of companies who have been helping the orphanage. We received a tremendous amount of help these past few months, so the head, Mrs. Jason, decided to do a simple thank you celebration where the Kids will showcase their talents in a program,” I told him.         He just looked at me and nodded as if he was interested. I wondered what was going on in his head.         “That’s is such a good idea, Kathy!’ Belinda exclaimed, “I’m looking forward to that event” she continued         “Of course, Belinda, You and Jack will always be first on the list. Your company has helped the orphanage for years. Right, Miles?” I smiled, looking at him         “Oh yes, That was such a great idea. I will never miss it. Let me know the details, and I will let my secretary schedule me for it,” Miles answered. He seemed anxious. Before I could thank him, his phone rang loudly. He looked at it and frowned.         “I’m sorry, I need to get this. It’s important,” Miles stood up and left the dining table. “Excuse me.”          Belinda looked at me and shook her head. She seemed worried.         “Is everything okay?” I asked her         “Yeah, I cant tell you right now, Kathy. I’ll tell you next time, now go on, please continue your food. I let Ms. Nina bring out the dessert later. Let us not wait for Miles,” Belinda worriedly spoke to me, bringing back my attention to the food.         Ten minutes later, Miles went back and apologized. Saying it was a work-related problem, and he couldn’t just ignore it. I tried to believe in him, but his Mom’s looked said the other thing. We finished our food and had glasses of wine when I decided to bid goodbye, and I knew it didn't sound polite for running away after having a sumptuous dinner. I wouldn't say I liked Miles right now, and the way he affected me or being in the same room with him felt strange.         “I’m leaving too; I’ll send you home, Kathy,” Miles offered. ‘Wow’         “It’s okay, thank you, I can walk home,” I replied to him. Being in one place with him was already torture. Sitting next to him will be a death of me.         “Let him send you home, Kathy. It’s already dark outside. I won’t let you leave this house walking, or else, I’ll let you stay for the whole night,” Jack bickered. He was a protective father.         I wondered what happened to the energetic, will-minded Kathy that I used to be, but now, Every time I hear his name, my heart was overpowering my brain, and I felt like an infatuated puppy.         “Kathy! Are you ready to go home?” Miles asked me, bringing me back to reality.         Feeling defeated, “Yes, let’s go,” I answered.          I hugged the old couple goodbye and left the house. We headed straight to Miles’s car, and to my surprised, he opened the door for me. I went inside the car, smiling, and thanked him as he closed the door. He ran straight to the driver’s side and turned the ignition on.         The travel was so short. I didn’t even notice that we were already at my house’s front yard. I looked at Miles and thanked him, but before I could open the door, Mile’s held my left hand that was sitting on my left leg. I turned and looked at him, not before realizing his face was just inches away from me. Was he going to hug me goodnight? Before I could ask him a question, his lips locked on mine, I knew it was the wine doing this as I taste the sweet flavored wine Belinda served after dinner.         My mouth opened as I responded to his kiss by clutching his hair. I felt my legs getting jelly. A heat started crawling from my stomach down between my legs, glad that I was still sitting in the car, or else I would look like melted jello in front of Miles. I have had kissed my ex-boyfriends before but not as passionate as we were doing right now.         ‘Wait. Why!? Why are we kissing,’ my mind smacked me back to reality. I was blaming this on the alcohol. My eyes widen as I pulled away and broke the kiss. We were both panting and running out of breath. It was a passionate one. I wiped my swollen lips using the back of my hand.         “Miles….” I uttered, looking away from him. I couldn’t think of the words to say. Miles gawked away his eyes from me and found the car’s wiper more interesting.         “I’m sorry, Kathy, that’s not supposed to happen. I’m sorry…” he sincerely apologized.         “It's okay, Miles, go... Goodnight,” I looked away as I opened the car’s door and strode away to our front porch. I took out my house keys, and within seconds, I was inside our house, shutting the door behind me. I leaned my back against the door and touched my swollen lips that were locked on Mile’s kissable lips a moment ago. I can’t believe it, Miles kissed me, and I kissed him back.         I went to my room and freshened up myself. This time my body took to me to la-land earlier than I expected.
