Miles POV
I can’t believe I kissed Kathy tonight. I was only thinking of hugging her goodnight, but the smell of strawberry and honey drew me closer and urged me to kiss her.
I arrived home and went straight to my small bar. Pouring myself a glass of whiskey and drank it in one gulped. ‘You still kissed her.’ My fickle mind reminded me. ‘I thought you have no feelings for her.’
‘Ugh!’ I clamped and tugged my hair back, ‘i***t, admit it, you want her in your bed’ No! my other mind scolded me. ‘I can’t play with her, and she's a sister to me’ ‘Sister? Who would kiss his sister’ ahhh! I brushed away my thoughts and went straight to the bathroom; a cold shower could be an answer for all of this.
After punishing myself for almost an hour of a shower, I went straight to my bed. Its been nearly two months since Kathy arrived, and seeing her was torture. She had grown to a beautiful swan, it was not that she was ugly before, but she had changed a lot. She had grown to love children physically and mentally, which I thought she had no interest in doing so.
I knew it because I’ve seen her more than she’d seen me here since she arrived; I silently watched her while working with children.
I knew what I was feeling for her wasn’t right. Maybe I was just smitten with her beauty. This feeling must be nipped in the bud. It was forbidden since we’ve grown to treat each other as siblings, plus she was my best friend's sister.
I was almost asleep when I heard my phone ringing again. I checked it. It's Nadia. She also called me this evening while I was at my parent’s house. I told her that I would call her back, yet she insisted on talking to me for a while.
I didn’t want to disappoint my Mom, but the way she looked at me this evening was alarming. She never liked Nadia. She said she couldn’t ignore her guts about her. She may not know what the real story was, but I can sense that she disapproved of her for me. Mom must remember not to worry, Nadia and I were over, and she was only a friend to me.
“Hello,” I answered the call.
“Miles, please help me” I sensed that she was crying. I heard her sniffling.
“What happened this time again?’ I asked her worriedly as I get up from my bed.
“He found me…” she continuously cries on the other side. “Please, Just take me back to New York. I will feel safer with you than here,”.. she begged.
“Let me see what I can do about that, but for now, find a safer place to hide in for the meantime. I’ll call you back tomorrow,” I told her.
“Thank you, Miles. I love you.”
“Goodnight, Nadia, Please be safe,” I answered back before hanging up the phone.
I have been helping Nadia for the past two years; We had lost contact with each other after what happened seven years ago. She was one of the main reasons why Marcus did the unthinkable. Though I was a part of it, that didn’t warrant Marcus to hurt himself and the people he loved. I still wished he made the right choice. Nadia disappeared after Marcus died. No one knew where she went; even her family didn’t know where she was until she came running to me seeking help.
For years, Nadia had been playing hide and seek with her ex-husband. She told me how abusive he was and been wanted to reconcile with her. Nadia couldn’t call and report to the police since he belonged to a Mob group. She couldn’t just send him to jail. What Nadia does was to hide and look for shelter in different cities and states. She contacted me when everything was falling off. We remained friends, nothing more than that.
I put my phone on the bedside table. The moment I put my head on the pillow, I was out.
