Kathy POV
“Kathy, it's time for you to go home,” Mrs. Jason reminded me. I was sitting in my clinic’s office, typing reports on my computer.
“You should be home by four, but you seem busy, sweetheart. Take time to rest.’’ She continued
I checked my watch, and it’s already six o’clock in the evening. “Oh, great,” I mumbled. I really loved my job. I was enjoying it.
“Thanks for reminding me, Mrs. Jason. I’ll be finishing soon; see you tomorrow!” I waved and said goodbye to her.
I finished my work after 10 minutes, as I prepared my things on the table, a letter fell from the folder Mrs. Jason gave me last Monday. I picked and checked it. My eyes widen as I saw the message. It was an invitation to an annual gala of RobertsCarlson company. It'll happen this weekend, which also meant the day after tomorrow.
I didn’t have any dresses for the party. Mrs. Jason was expecting me to join in. She told me she couldn’t attend the party as it will also be her son’s birthday and they were making a family dinner at home. How stupid I was to forget about this. I needed to leave early tomorrow and shop for the dress.
Bidding goodbye to the employees, I got in my car and drove away.

I checked myself on the mirror for one last time, and I was wearing a midnight blue v-neck mermaid style gown that perfectly fitted my body. I had to buy this beauty in a rush.
My eyes were perfectly lined, combined with a smoky shadowed look. Choosing the nude color lipstick to match my overall makeup. I tied my hair in a half up half down style, clipped it flower hairpins I found on my dresser table, which I don’t remember where it came from. Still, it was cute accessories that must be since my things back in High school. I grabbed my small black clutch and put my phone, a bit of cash, and credit cards. I took my three inches wedge heels and went downstairs.
Belinda called me this morning, saying Jack, she and I would go together to the party. I politely declined to tell her that I can manage to get myself a ride, but she insisted. They were going to pick me up since I told her I had no plans to bring any date for the gala.
It was five minutes before the call time. I heard a soft knock on my door, “Coming!” I stood up and composed myself. I opened the door. My eyes went saucer upon seeing the person in front of me,
“Hey…” Miles greeted me
“Oh, hi! Miles!” I greeted him back, trying my best to calm down. I haven’t spoken to him since the kissing incident. I wasn’t expecting him to be here in front of me, looking gorgeous in his black coat and blue tie. Our color was matching. Great.
“Mom told me to pick you up for the gala, and they're on their way to the hotel.”
“Ohh, I thought they’ll fetch me up. I wasn’t expecting you…” I honestly told him,
“It’s fine. I was on my way to the hotel when Mom called me, I was supposed to pick someone up, but she decided to go there by herself.” He explained.
Ohh, okay, he had no intention of taking me out but was only asked by his Mom.
“Please come inside,” opening the door wide “Can you spare me a minute? I just need to put that shoes on.” pointing him my pair on the floor.
“Sure, take your time ” He went inside and closed the door. I plumped myself on the couch and started putting my shoes on. I was not used to going to parties and not also a fan of dressing myself up. It took me a while to wear simple heeled shoes. Standing up, I carefully poised myself up as I adjusted my whole body from it.
I found two blue eyes staring intently at me. I waved my hand in front of Miles. He looked stunned while blinking his eyes.
“Miles to Earth, earth to Miles,” I called him.
His eyes widen, recognizing me waving in front of him. “Oh, I’m sorry for Zoning out,” Miles apologized. He looked uneasy. “You look stunningly beautiful…” Miles blurted out, grinning as he looked at me.
“Tha-thanks…shall we?” I stuttered, trying to hide my blushed face, silently praying he won’t notice it.
“We shall.” He hooked his arm with me and left the house. We walked towards a black Ferrari on the front porch. Breaking the silence, I complimented the ride that was waiting for us.
“I love your car, Miles. It suits well on you.”
He chuckled, “Thanks, that's my first ever car I bought with my own money. Marcus and I used to dream of driving that very same car brand,” he said, looking proud as he gazed at his car. I smiled, thinking about what-ifs.
“He would have ten models of that if he’s still with us. I’m glad you’re making yours and his dreams come true.” It was true. Marcus would probably have a collection of cars if he were here. He loved cars so much. I still remember the day dad bought him a car as a birthday present. Not as fancy as what Miles owned but enough for the teenage boy to show off with his friends.
Miles opened the door for me and let me settled in. He walked around the car, opened his door, and sat buckling his seatbelt on. He started the engine and drove off.
The travel to the gala was quiet. I never dared to ask him a question. I didn’t want to start the conversation and end it awkwardly. The tension between us was so thick you could slice it.
“So, how was your life back in Switzerland?” said Miles breaking the ice.
“Uhm, It was okay….” I said. I had no idea what to tell him. My life back home was simple and happy. I managed to make new friends, not as many as I had here, though.
“What do you mean, okay?” he asked curiously. He was not really stopping.
“I mean, I lived a simple life and didn’t have many friends as I had here.” I sighed
“That’s interesting.” He said, his eyes focus on the road
“Yeah, it was. I kinda lost interest in finding new ones, though I had some in College,” I told him.
“Have you manage to meet all your friends who stayed here in town?”
“Yes, some of them. I’m meeting Josh tomorrow, and he just came back in town,” I said
“Oh, that Josh?” he looked at me, smirking as he halted the car at a red light.
“Yeah, him, what’s with the look, Miles?” I asked him. Was he insinuating something?
“Nothing,” he smirked. ‘Bastard!’
I didn’t speak to him again. If he was thinking about the past, then, God forbid me, I’ll kill him. I still remember the day when I talked to Miles about what Josh and I saw on the day of my special day. I asked Miles to meet us at the coffee shop.
“What is this all about again, Kathy?” Miles asked me as he sat down
“I need to tell you something. Josh is coming too,” I checked my watch. It's five past four.
‘Josh, where the hell are you?’ I asked myself.
He should be here soon since Josh was my only witness that day, and he can testify it in from of Miles. For sure, Miles will believe in me.
“Okay,” Miles said. “Do you want to drink something?” he asked.
“Yes, just a chocolate milkshake, please,” I told, fidgeting my keys. Silently praying for Josh to come here soon.
“Okay, stay here” Miles stood up and went to the counter. He ordered himself a coffee and my chocolate milkshake. After 10 minutes, he came back, and Josh wasn’t still here.
“So, where is this Josh, and why do I have to talk to him,” Miles asked me again. He kept looking at his watch; he seems occupied and needed to leave soon.
“Ahm, I just. I want to tell you something..” I answered.
“Then why not spill it?” Miles taking a sip from his cup. He looked vexed now.
“I need Josh with me, he.. he,” I stutter. Josh can’t do this to me. He stood me up.
“Is this something about Nadia then?” I can sense he was starting to get pissed
“ahh., ahh..” I couldn’t form my words. ‘How would I tell him this..’
“That’s it, Kathy.” He leaned forward, making our faces just inches away from each other. “How many times do I have to tell you to leave Nadia alone?” he whisper-yelled. His light eyes turned dark. He was cross.
“Miles, you don’t understand! She’s trying to manipulate you, and you don’t have any idea. We saw her having s*x with two guys and…. and… they were filming it! I saw it. No! Josh and I saw everything!!! ” I blurted it all out, making him try to understand the reason why I was here.
“For Pete’s sake Kathy, please stop this,” Miles's eyes burning and as if he was looking directly into my soul. “What Nadia had ever done to you to torment her! She might not be as rich or classy as you are, but please stop bullying her!” he said, accusing me.
No, he misunderstood it.
People have started to look at us, snooping about the commotions.
I stood up, slamming my hands on the table. “I wasn’t not Bullying her! I just wanted to tell you the truth!” I shouted
“You’re unbelievable, Kathy! ” Miles mocked me.
“How I wish you will believe me, but I guess, no matter what I do, you indeed never have faith in me. I hope you won’t regret it. I was just trying to protect you,” I said in a low voice.
“I don’t f*****g need your protection!”
I stared at him. I was in a fit of anger and frustration. I opened my mouth to say something, but no. ‘Kathy, you're bigger than this,’ my mind reminded me. Then I stormed out of the coffee shop.
“Kathy!!” Miles shouted
