CHAPTER 1
-THEY KILLED MY SISTER -
Ella threw her phone away. It was not helping her distract herself from the fact that today marks one year since her sister Nicole passed away.
She swallowed a bitter lump that was burning at the back of her throat and continued staring at the white ceiling board in front of her.
She bit her lower lip trying so hard not to cry but she ended up crying. Tears fell uncontrollably from her eyes like water from a faulty tap. She could not hold back anymore.
The past one year had been so hard for her without her big sister Nicole. She was the only person that she had after her parents died in a tragic accident. They were always there for each other until her demise…It has been a year now but she could not get it in herself to think about what happened.
She got off the bed and walked to the window. As she stared at the horizon that stretched beyond, she continued sobbing. Nothing about the bright day got her to think that life is good. Life was horrible.
She graduated campus last year but so far she has not been able to find a job. She loved her career so much. She was a fashion designer who is so passionate about her job. She loved styling also. Maybe if she had gotten a job then it would have made her grieving pretty easier because the kind of work that she does makes her so happy and it gives her so much fulfilment. She could tell from the projects that she did back on campus.
Her sister was her first ever client and she loved her work. It is such a shame that…She had to pause because she felt the pain all over again. This entire thing was connected and it pointed to one thing. She was never going to move past the face that her sister died. All her thoughts led her back to that unfortunate experience.
It is really such a shame. They say that love is what will free us but why did that lead to her sister's death, huh? One minute her sister was lost in love with a charming prince but the next she was not getting out of bed because of the same reason. If love is supposed to heal then why did it not heal her sister?
But really what Nicole went through was really difficult. Finding out that it was not love after all, it was just a game. The three brothers were just using her to entertain themselves.
Ella took a deep breath as she ran her hands through her hair. She was at a loss. She wished that she could afford therapy and heal this side of her that is so broken.
Anyway, she needed not to be told. She had learnt from her sister that there is nothing like love. Love is just an illusion. If you are stupid enough to believe that it exists then you will just end up heartbroken. Maybe the takeaway from all this is that she will never fall in love.
Accepting this new reality somehow made her calm down. She wiped her tears away and for the first time in such a long time, she acknowledged that the blue sky is actually pretty.
She was seated, thinking about nothing when her doorbell rang.
She smiled to herself at the thought of it. That must be Brenda. She has been a close friend of hers ever since Nicole passed away. Of course she could not fit in her shoes but she is trying her best to cheer her up so that she does not feel alone.
For the most part of their friendship, all that Brenda has seen from her is this intense sadness. She had never really seen her happy. Today however, she didn't want her to find her crying. She therefore ran to the mirror and smiled the fake smile that she had been practising before she went to get the door.
" You can't believe what just happened," Brenda said in a happy tone as she walked into her tiny house.
" Talk to me about it," Ella said smiling as she followed her to the only coach that she had.
" I have gotten a job," Brenda announced and instantly Ella went to hug her. The two of them were desperate for a job. They did the same course in college and Ella was genuinely happy that she got a job. This made her aware that she is going to get a job pretty soon.
" Congratulations my love," Ella said with a genuine smile. She was so happy for her.
" Let me read it to you. I am going to be paid so much money. My life is going to change," Brenda said.
" Tell me, tell me the details," Ella begged.
" I am going to be both the designer and stylist of Zayn, Carlos and Arthur. You know them from Forbes Magazine. They are the famous Peterson brothers," Brenda announced and instantly Ella's smile turned to a frown. She couldn't believe that this was happening. Not today, on her sister's first heavenly birthday.
" Why the long face? Aren't you proud of me?" Brenda had to pause and ask when she saw that Ella's mood had completely changed.
Ella didn't know how to articulate what she was feeling. She was in so much pain.
" Please talk to me. I know that something is wrong," Brenda said when fat tears started falling from Ella's eyes. She had tried to control the tears but it did not work.
Ella sobbed for a while and Brenda was gracious enough to give her the moment that she wanted to process things. Eventually, she had to tell her what triggered her.
" You cannot take the job," Ella told her.
" But why?" Brenda was confused.
" You cannot work for the Peterson brothers," Ella added.
" But why? They are famous. That's not all, they are willing to pay me well," Brenda jumped to their defence making this hard for Ella.
"You just can't," Ella started crying. She had tried so hard not to be that sad friend but it was not working. Not when she knows that her best-friend's life is in danger. She has lost her sister before. She cannot lose her best friend too.
" Talk to me Ella, I know that you have a reason for saying this," Brenda begged.
" Brenda, the Peterson brothers killed my sister one year ago," Ella said and broke down once again.
